The valuables, destined for Ukraine&#8217;s state Oschadbank, were detained by Hungarian counter-terrorism authorities on 5 March while being transported in two armoured cars.<\/p>\n<p>This incident sparked considerable anger in <a data-ylk=\"slk:Kyiv;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/kyiv\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Kyiv<\/a>, with Ukrainian officials accusing Hungary&#8217;s pro-Russian government of acting unlawfully and leveraging the seizure as part of Prime Minister <a data-ylk=\"slk:Viktor Orb\u00e1n;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/viktor-orban\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>\u2019s anti-Ukraine election campaign. The two neighbouring nations were already embroiled in a significant dispute concerning Hungary\u2019s access to Russian oil via a pipeline crossing Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr Zelenskyy stated on social media that the return represented &#8220;an important step in relations with Hungary.&#8221; This development follows Mr Orb\u00e1n\u2019s landslide defeat in last month&#8217;s election, which has fostered optimism that the new Hungarian administration will adopt a less confrontational stance towards Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful to Hungary for its constructive approach and civilized step,\u201d Zelenskyy wrote. \u201cI thank everyone on Ukraine\u2019s team who fought for a fair decision and defended the interests of our state and our people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the seizure, Hungarian authorities said they suspected money laundering, and Orb\u00e1n ordered that the shipment \u2014 which included $40 million and 35 million euros in cash, as well as 9 kilograms (19.8 pounds) of gold \u2014 be held in custody for up to 60 days while his country\u2019s tax authority investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s tax authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Viktor Orb\u00e1n (AP)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_the_independent_us_877\/cf371380de3b64c1da80ef6de0a04cf4.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Viktor Orb\u00e1n (AP)<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian bank employees traveling with the shipment were held by Hungarian authorities for over 24 hours before being expelled from the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian officials said the shipment was a routine transfer of assets between state banks, and accused Orb\u00e1n\u2019s government of blackmailing <a data-ylk=\"slk:Kyiv;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/kyiv\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Kyiv<\/a> to try and pressure it to restore interrupted shipments of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, which had been damaged by a Russian drone strike.<\/p>\n<p>But Orb\u00e1n ordered the tax authority to determine the origin, destination and intended use of the shipment, as well as the identity of the seven expelled Ukrainians \u201cand their possible links to criminal or terrorist organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n also suggested without providing evidence the shipment may have been intended to fund his primary political opponent, the center-right Tisza party, which ultimately won with a two-thirds majority in parliament during last month&#8217;s election.<\/p>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s government had blocked a major, 90-billion euro ($106-billion) <a data-ylk=\"slk:European Union;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/european-union\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">European Union<\/a> loan to Ukraine over the interruption of Russian oil via the Druzhba.
