Trump supporters fume at Obama meeting with Canada\u2019s Carney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was only a few days ago that former president <a href=\"http:\/\/indy100.com\/topic\/barack-obama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Barack Obama<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/viral\/barack-obama-trump-stephen-colbert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">praised for his humour<\/a> during an interview with outgoing late night talk show host <a href=\"http:\/\/indy100.com\/topic\/stephen-colbert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stephen Colbert<\/a>, when the latter joked about how he would perform as Potus.<\/p>\n<p>But now, <a href=\"http:\/\/indy100.com\/topic\/obama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Obama<\/a>\u2019s upset the American right after he met with Canadian prime minister <a href=\"http:\/\/indy100.com\/topic\/mark-carney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mark Carney<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p>Carney, who was previously governor for the Bank of England, tweeted a video on Saturday (9 May) with the caption: \u201cWelcome back to Canada, President @BarackObama. Thank you for joining us in Toronto for important conversations on how we can build a better and more just future \u2013 and empower more people to build with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conservative commentator Nick Sortor was among those unhappy with the interaction, though, as he fumed: \u201cObama needs to sit down and figure out his freaking place before his ass ends up in prison for violating the Logan Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Author Buzz Patterson branded it a \u201ctext book Logan Act violation\u201d, while staunch Trump loyalist <a href=\"http:\/\/indy100.com\/topic\/laura-loomer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Laura Loomer<\/a> claimed it was a \u201ccoup\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So what exactly is the Logan Act?<\/p>\n<p>Enacted back in 1799, \u201818 U.S. Code \u00a7 953\u2019 states: \u201cAny citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fedsoc.org\/commentary\/fedsoc-blog\/the-logan-act-an-introduction\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Federalist Society<\/a>, inspiration for the Act came from one Republican legislator George Logan, who went to France and met with government officials there in \u201can effort to improve US-French relations\u201d during \u201cthe undeclared \u2018quasi-war\u2019\u201d between the two nations in 1798.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S. President John Adams and leaders of the Federalist Party in Congress were unhappy with Logan\u2019s independent and unauthorized diplomatic effort, believing that it undermined official U.S. policy toward France.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a message to Congress later in 1798, Adams recommended that Congress pass legislation limiting future acts of private diplomacy between the United States and France,\u201d the society says.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Congressional Research Service in 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs_external_products\/LSB\/PDF\/LSB10058\/LSB10058.2.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> only two indictments under the Logan Act have been brought forward by prosecutors, and none of them resulted in a conviction.<\/p>\n<p>And the fury from Trump supporters has since been ridiculed by the president\u2019s critics, with Democrat content creator Harry Sisson writing: \u201cThis is what real leadership looks like and they\u2019re furious over it. Stay mad!\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>One X\/Twitter user commented: \u201cFunny how maga think president Obama of all people doesn\u2019t understand the Logan Act.
