Jeff Bezos and Lauren S\u00e1nchez are the honorary chairs and financial sponsors<\/a> for the Met Gala on May 4, but that doesn\u2019t mean the fashion world is rolling out the red carpet for them.<\/p>\n

The Amazon founder and his wife are being met with a rather chilly reception, especially in a year of economic hardship for many people across the globe. The pushback on billionaires is smacking the couple right in the face as protestors line up the Manhattan streets with signs rejecting the \u201cAmazon Prime Gala\u201d and the \u201cBezos Ball,\u201d as reported by The New York Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

The charity event, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s Costume Institute, has been a coveted invite for celebrities<\/a> for years, but now, Bezos\u2019 participation has him framed at \u201cthe villain of the night,\u201d a source told Rob Shuter\u2019s Naughty But Nice<\/a> Substack.<\/p>\n

There are reports that the couple\u2019s presence might be the headline-generating news of the night, which is exactly what Bezos wants to avoid. \u201cJeff is a target \u2014 politically, socially, and physically. At this point, the smartest move may be for Lauren to pose alone and for Jeff to disappear,\u201d the insider alleged.<\/p>\n

For S\u00e1nchez, this is her big night on the red carpet \u2014\u00a0and protestors are not going to stop her. \u201cThis is the night she\u2019s spent years dressing for, networking for, and socially climbing toward,\u201d the source noted.<\/p>\n

Besides the economic backlash, Bezos\u2019 support of Donald Trump<\/a> has soured some consumers on the Amazon brand.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s obviously one of the great avatars for, you know, just endless, rapacious accumulation of wealth and exploitation of workers at the expense of the rest of us,\u201d Micah Uetricht, editor of the political magazine, Jacobin, told The New York Times. He described Bezos as \u201cthe worst choice possible\u201d as a Met Gala sponsor.<\/p>\n

The blatant level of wealth irks many people in the fashion industry because Bezos\u2019 company doesn\u2019t have a great history when it comes to workers\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there is that money to sponsor this gala, there should also be money to pay the workers fairly,\u201d fashion designer Cindy Castro told<\/a> CNN.<\/p>\n

Bezos and S\u00e1nchez have become fixtures in the front row at fashion week across the globe, and becoming the central figures of the elite Met Gala seems to indicate that their behind-the-scenes moves<\/a> paid off.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey like expensive things,\u201d journalist Amy Odell said of Bezos and S\u00e1nchez to The Wall Street Journal.<\/a> \u201cAnd fashion has never been more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n
