Donald Trump<\/a> has said his vice president JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio<\/a> would be a \u201cdream team\u201d for the White House.<\/p>\n

But the US president did not make clear who he would prefer as a possible successor and to run for the top job.<\/p>\n

He also made clear it did not mean \u201cyou have my endorsement under any circumstance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump made his remarks after he invited guests at a dinner in the White House Rose Garden to clap for either man in an ad hoc popularity contest.<\/p>\n

Decrying potential Democratic opponents, including former vice president Kamala Harris<\/a> and outgoing California governor Gavin Newsom, he said there were \u201ca lot of beauties out there JD\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI envy you and other people, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is it going to be? Is it going to be JD? Is it going to be somebody else? I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guests were invited by the US President to show their support for JD Vance or Marco Rubio (Julia Demaree Nikhinson\/AP) (AP)<\/p>\n

Inviting people to express their view, he added: \u201cOK, lets go\u2019, are you ready? Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAll right, sounds like a good ticket. That was a perfect ticket.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the way, I do believe that\u2019s a dream team, but these are minor details.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he went on: \u201cI think it sounds like presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the US constitution, Mr Trump cannot run for a third term, but he has repeatedly suggested he could do so, although this has appeared aimed more at provoking outrage from critics.<\/p>\n

He has previously heaped praise on both Mr Vance and Mr Rubio.<\/p>\n

Last month, Ms Harris again said she was actively considering another presidential bid in 2028.<\/p>\n

She replaced then-president Joe Biden<\/a> as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee after he dropped out of the race.<\/p>\n

She ultimately lost to her Republican challenger, Mr Trump.<\/p>\n

There are a number of names in the frame to be the party\u2019s candidate in 2028, with no clear front-runner.<\/p>\n
