{"id":69255,"date":"2026-05-13T11:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T11:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/69255\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T11:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T11:08:12","slug":"poland-pm-vows-to-prioritise-recognising-foreign-same-sex-marriages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/69255\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland PM vows to prioritise recognising foreign same-sex marriages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img width=\"792\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Donald-Tusk-same-sex-marriage.jpg\" class=\"attachment-featured-image size-featured-image wp-post-image\" alt=\"Poland PM Donald Tusk\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Poland\u2019s PM Donald Tusk made a vow about same-sex marriages (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Poland\u2019s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has assured that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/topic\/poland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poland<\/a> will begin recognising same-sex marriages performed in other European Union countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2026\/03\/23\/polish-court-rules-foreign-same-sex-marriages-must-be-recognised\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following major court rulings<\/a> from both the Court of Justice of the European Union and Poland\u2019s Supreme Administrative Court.<\/p>\n<p>The November 2025 ruling from the European Court of Justice and the 20 March ruling from the NSA stem from a case involving a married same-sex Polish couple whose 2018 German marriage certificate was previously denied entry into Poland\u2019s civil registry.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting on Tuesday (12 May), Tusk apologised for what he described as the \u201cyears of rejection and humiliation\u201d faced by same-sex couples in Poland, as per <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2026\/05\/12\/polish-pm-apologises-to-same-sex-couples-pledges-to-recognise-marriages-conducted-in-other-eu-states\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Notes from Poland<\/a>. \u201c[This is] a matter of human dignity: the right to happiness, the right to equal treatment by the state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to apologise to all those who, for many, many years, felt rejected and humiliated. For many years, the state has failed the test.\u201d Tusk added that his government would make compliance with the court rulings a priority, while stressing that any legal changes would be implemented within the framework of existing Polish law.<\/p>\n<p>The rulings mark a historic shift for Poland, one of the few remaining EU countries that still does not legally recognise same-sex unions domestically.
