{"id":70093,"date":"2026-05-13T22:57:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T22:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/70093\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T22:57:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T22:57:13","slug":"supporters-of-bill-to-aid-ukraine-and-sanction-russia-hit-number-to-force-house-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/70093\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporters of bill to aid Ukraine and sanction Russia hit number to force House vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">WASHINGTON \u2013 Supporters of a bill to aid <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia-ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ukraine<\/a> and sanction Russia reached a critical threshold on Wednesday that allows them to bypass Republican leadership and force a vote on the House floor in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The legislation seeks to cement U.S. assistance for Ukraine by approving more than $1 billion in security aid and making another $8 billion available in the form of loans. Supporters have been calling on President Donald Trump to act more forcefully to deter Russia and boost Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Lawmaking gained 218 signatures on a petition from Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York that will force a House vote. While the measure is unlikely to become law, the vote will put lawmakers on record concerning their support for Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The petition was signed by 215 Democrats and two Republicans \u2014 Reps. Don Bacon of Nebraska and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. Rep. Kevin Kiley, an Independent from California, became the final signature required to force the vote. Kiley said the bill would help strengthen Ukraine&#8217;s leverage to advance a durable peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe must also send a strong message that Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-russia-intelligence-35afae34198408d670941f971d383378\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support<\/a> for Iran\u2019s targeting of U.S. military assets will not be tolerated,\u201d Kiley said in a statement explaining his support for the petition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But Speaker Mike Johnson voiced concerns about the timing of the vote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019m talking with some of the sponsors of that right now,\u201d Johnson said. \u201c\u2026 The latest news out of Russia is that it looks like the war is scaling back, scaling down, coming to a conclusion. I think Vladimir Putin said that himself in the last few days, and so this would be a good time for Congress to see how that pans out. So I\u2019m going to be talking to my colleagues about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The fighting continues <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Trump said Tuesday he believes Moscow and Kyiv will soon reach a deal to end fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe end of the war in Ukraine I really think is getting very close,\u201d Trump said as he left the White House for a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-xi-china-trip-arrival-353c768987542843e2033aa684266879\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">summit in Beijing.<\/a> \u201cBelieve it or not, it\u2019s getting closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Putin said in a speech last weekend that his invasion of Ukraine is possibly \u201ccoming to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But on Wednesday, Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-drones-caa36f593f0eb2f853921a4580f9810d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired<\/a> at least 800 drones in a massive daytime barrage across Ukraine, killing at least six people and wounding dozens, including children, in one of the longest attacks by Moscow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ukraine#\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4-year-old war,<\/a> President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Fitzpatrick said he did not agree that the war is near a conclusion and the only way he would not vote for the Meeks measure would be if Russia withdrew its forces from Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">&#8220;There\u2019s people dying as we speak, so no, the war is not winding down,\u201d Fitzpatrick said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Meeks said that it was time for lawmakers to go on the record about where they stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cMembers of Congress, some tell me that they are supportive of Ukraine. Well, we\u2019re going to finally get a vote on the floor to make that determination,\u201d Meeks said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He said he believes the House vote will &#8220;put pressure on the Senate and I think it should tell the president that America is looking and we want to stand by our allies and not Vladimir Putin.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Prospects in the Senate<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Lawmakers have for months discussed various proposals to sanction Russia, but much of that talk disappeared when Trump launched an attack on Iran in late February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While Senate Republicans have mostly been supportive of Ukraine, they have hesitated to act without Trump\u2019s support. On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed skepticism that the Senate could move to Russia sanctions, saying \u201cwe have such a pileup\u201d of other legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has pushed for a Russia sanctions bill in the Senate, said Wednesday, \u201cThere are parts of the House bill I like, parts of it that I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Republicans and Democrats alike have also been frustrated that the Department of Defense has not spent $400 million in military aid for Ukraine that lawmakers allotted last year. During a hearing earlier this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon was working on a plan to spend those funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Support for Ukraine has been a major point of tension between Congress and Trump, who pledged to quickly settle the war once he was president.
