Jeff Bezos and Lauren S\u00e1nchez\u2019s role in the 2026 Met Gala<\/a> may be a one-time thing, as insiders speculate that the event is headed for a dramatic reinvention.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a real feeling internally that the Met Gala has reached a breaking point,\u201d one insider told Rob Shuter\u2019s Naught but Nice<\/a> Substack on May 13. \u201cToo many celebrities, too much noise, too much desperation to go viral. People are finally admitting the formula no longer works.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bezos and S\u00e1nchez became the unofficial faces of the 2026 Met Gala<\/a> after reportedly donating upwards of $10 million to the Met\u2019s Costume Institute. The pair served as honorary co-chairs and the event as a whole attracted enormous donations from other tech giants, including guests from Meta, OpenAI, and Snapchat, per Fortune<\/a>. This marked a drastic change for the event, which has historically been defined by its actor, musician, and artist guests.<\/p>\n

Outside and across New York, Bezos\u2019 involvement sparked protests<\/a>, bringing the wrong kind of attention to the event, which is intended to be a fundraiser. Organizers are allegedly reevaluating what the Met Gala has become, which may lead to a reduction in Bezos and S\u00e1nchez\u2019s involvement. \u201cThe conversation now is about making it smaller, quieter, and more exclusive again,\u201d another source claimed. \u201cThe original spirit of the event has been completely lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

One fashion insider went as far as to link the Met Gala\u2019s waning culture capital directly to Bezos and his wife. \u201cJeff and Lauren shattered the illusion that the Met Gala is still the most exclusive invitation on earth,\u201d they claimed. \u201cSuddenly the Met looked overexposed, corporate, and oddly outdated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the protests, which earned celebrity support from stars including Mark Ruffalo<\/a> and Olivia Rodrigo<\/a>, Bezos did not walk the Met Gala red carpet, leaving S\u00e1nchez to enter alone before joining him inside. It is widely reported that S\u00e1nchez is spearheading the couple\u2019s increased involvement in the fashion industry. After her wedding to Bezos<\/a> in June 2025, the couple announced a partnership with the CFDA through the Bezos Earth Fund called The Next Thread Initiative. Later, reports speculated that Bezos was looking to buy Vogue<\/a> parent company Conde Nast, an acquisition that hasn\u2019t come to fruition. \u201cI\u2019m learning more and more about fashion every day,\u201d S\u00e1nchez told Vogue in a 2026 Met Gala interview.<\/p>\n
