{"id":70308,"date":"2026-05-14T02:15:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T02:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/70308\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T02:15:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T02:15:12","slug":"vance-johnson-run-cover-for-trumps-financial-situation-gaffe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/70308\/","title":{"rendered":"Vance, Johnson run cover for Trump&#8217;s &#8216;financial situation&#8217; gaffe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vice President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4567018\/jd-vance-pushes-states-root-out-medicaid-fraud-risk-losing-federal-funding\/\">JD Vance<\/a> and House Speaker <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/4566729\/mike-johnson-warns-mini-mamdanis-taking-us-far-left\/\">Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-LA) on Wednesday brushed aside President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4566063\/china-red-carpet-trump-arrival\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s declaration that the \u201cfinancial situation\u201d of Americans was not a motivation for ending the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>Both the vice president and House speaker faced questions about the president\u2019s comment during two separate press events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know the context in which he made that comment, but I can tell you the president thinks about American financial situations,\u201d Johnson told reporters during his Wednesday press conference on Capitol Hill. \u201cI talk to him, on average, twice a day, sometimes three or four times a day, and we talk about it constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson added that Trump is \u201claser focused\u201d on reopening the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4565047\/trump-doesnt-need-help-china-end-iran-war\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, which he claimed \u201cwill alleviate a lot of pressure with gas prices and other things in the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance was also forced to clarify Trump\u2019s comments during his own Wednesday press conference, suggesting that the viral clip in question was a \u201cmisrepresentation of what the president said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, the president, and I, and the entire team \u2014 we care about the American people\u2019s financial situations,\u201d he countered. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the reasons why we passed the Working Families Tax Cut[s]. It\u2019s one of the reasons why we\u2019re so focused on fraud. We care about how the American people are doing, economically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump made the controversial remark before departing the White House for a bilateral summit in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4564423\/allies-xi-jinping-no-shot-convince-trump-change-taiwan-policy\/\">China<\/a> when asked to what degree he thinks about Americans\u2019 \u201cfinancial situation\u201d as he seeks an end to the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot even a little bit,\u201d the president responded, claiming that the only issue coloring his thinking is Iran\u2019s nuclear program. \u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation. I don\u2019t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats were quick to pounce on the comments in an effort to paint Republicans as out of touch on the issue of affordability. <\/p>\n<p>The vice president was asked about the politics at the White House on Wednesday. Vance said that the administration knows \u201cthat we have a lot of work to do in order to deliver on the prosperity that the American people deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4567018\/jd-vance-pushes-states-root-out-medicaid-fraud-risk-losing-federal-funding\/\">VANCE PUSHES STATES TO ROOT OUT MEDICAID FRAUD OR RISK LOSING FEDERAL FUNDING<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is hyperaware of this. I\u2019m hyperaware of this. We talk about it all the time,\u201d he continued, pushing the blame back onto the previous administration. \u201cWe know that the American people inherited a very bad inflation crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inflation number last month was not great,\u201d Vance concluded. \u201cBut take it back to the May of 2023 in the Biden administration or take it back to even further.
