US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that it is not possible to change the trajectory of Cuba as long as the current regime remains in charge.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no economy in Cuba. To the extent there\u2019s any wealth in Cuba, it doesn\u2019t go \u2013 it doesn\u2019t \u2013 forget about it, it doesn\u2019t go to the people. It doesn\u2019t even go to the government,\u201d Rubio said in an interview with Fox News, aired Wednesday but taped earlier this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe wealth is controlled by a private \u2013 by a company owned by military generals. They take all the money\u2026 They have a company that controls all of the moneymaking there that\u2019s sitting on $15-16 billion,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n
Rubio called Havana\u2019s economy \u201cbroken\u201d and \u201cnonfunctional,\u201d saying that it is \u201cimpossible to change it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou cannot change the economic trajectory of Cuba as long as the people who are in charge of it now are in charge of it. That\u2019s what\u2019s going to have to change because these people have proven incapable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope I\u2019m wrong. We\u2019ll give them a chance. But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to happen. I don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to be able to change the trajectory of Cuba as long as these people are in charge in that regime.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cuba is facing a fuel crisis amid the US oil embargo imposed on Jan. 30, along with widespread power outages.<\/p>\n
