{"id":71016,"date":"2026-05-14T13:43:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T13:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/71016\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T13:43:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T13:43:13","slug":"netanyahu-vows-defamation-suit-against-the-new-york-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/71016\/","title":{"rendered":"Netanyahu Vows Defamation Suit Against The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to sue the New York Times for defamation over Nicholas Kristof\u2019s op-ed entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/new-york-times-doubles-down-nicholas-kristof-defense\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians,\u201d<\/a> according to the Israel Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the publication by Nicholas Kristof in The New York Times of one of the most hideous and distorted lies ever published against the State of Israel in the modern press, which also received the backing of the newspaper, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar have instructed the initiation of a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times,\u201d the ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IsraelMFA\/status\/2054896697432519059?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on X<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Kristof\u2019s column alleges that Palestinians are regularly abused in Israeli prisons, reporting a \u201cpattern of widespread Israeli sexual violence against men, women and even children \u2014 by soldiers, settlers, interrogators in the Shin Bet internal security agency and, above all, prison guards.\u201d He also notes that there is no evidence the alleged behavior is ordered by Israeli leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The update comes after the paper has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/new-york-times-stands-by-nicholas-kristof-column-palestinians-israel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already twice defended<\/a> the Monday piece, calling it both \u201cdeeply reported\u201d and \u201cextensively fact-checked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNicholas Kristof\u2019s deeply reported piece of opinion journalism starts with a proposition to readers: \u2018Whatever our views of the Middle East conflict, we should be able to unite in condemning rape,\u2019\u201d a Times spokesperson shared on Wednesday. \u201cHe draws together on-the-record accounts and cites several analyses documenting the practice of sexual violence and abuse conducted by various parts of Israel\u2019s security forces and settlers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a class=\"the-wrap-read-more__image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/new-york-times-doubles-down-nicholas-kristof-defense\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/new-york-times-sues.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"New York Times\"   data-portal-copyright=\"TheWrap\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accounts of the 14 men and women he interviewed were corroborated with other witnesses, whenever possible, and with people the victims confided in \u2013 that includes family members and lawyers,\u201d they continued. \u201cDetails were extensively fact-checked, with accounts further cross-referenced with news reporting, independent research from human-rights groups, surveys, and in one case, with U.N. testimony. Independent experts were consulted on the assertions in the piece throughout reporting and fact-checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That statement came after the IFM first condemned the coverage on Tuesday: \u201cThe biased NYT piece relies on unverified sources tied to Hamas-linked networks. The main source: EMHRM, whose founder Ramy Abdu has documented ties to senior Hamas leaders. This isn\u2019t journalism. It\u2019s Hamas propaganda, a distortion of the truth and the facts all serving an anti-Israel agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNicholas Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has reported on sexual violence for decades, and is widely regarded as one of the world\u2019s best on-the-ground reporters documenting and bearing witness to sexual abuse experienced by women and men in war and conflict zones,\u201d a Times spokesperson stated following the initial criticism. \u201cHe traveled to the region to report firsthand on the stories of Palestinians who suffered abuse, and his article collects accounts in the victims\u2019 own words, backed by independent studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kristof has also acknowledged the outcry himself, writing on X, \u201cI appreciate the intense interest in my column. For skeptics, why not agree on Red Cross and lawyer visits for the 9,000 Palestinian \u2018security\u2019 prisoners? If you think these abuse allegations are false, such monitoring visits would be protective.
