The understatement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/14\/world\/asia\/trump-first-day-china-xi.html?smid=url-share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was included in the Times\u2019 reporting<\/a> on Eric Trump\u2019s decision to fly to China with his father while meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n<p>The story by the paper\u2019s White House correspondent Luke Broadwater noted, \u201cHis presence could raise questions about potential blurred lines between the government and the Trump family\u2019s business interests. The Trump Organization said Eric Trump would be traveling to China only to support his father, and would not pursue business while there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, if he said so\u2014that\u2019s all the paper of record needs, apparently.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP20261723933433-1.jpg\" alt=\"Eric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump, speaks at a campaign rally for his father, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2020, in Saco, Maine. Bukaty)\" class=\"wp-image-501502497\"  \/>Attribution: APEric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump, speaks at a campaign rally for his father, Sept. 17, 2020, in Saco, Maine. <\/p>\n<p>Left unsaid in the Times story is any mention of Eric Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/5\/13\/800038485\/world\/surprise-trumps-diplomatic-china-visit-is-just-another-grift\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">financial dealings<\/a> with the China-based bitcoin rig manufacturer Bitmain via his American Bitcoin Corp. The company has been under investigation over national security issues, and its closeness to Trump echoes activities from other business leaders (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/blog\/corruption-in-plain-sight-how-elon-musk-has-benefited-from-the-first-100-days-of-the-trump-administration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like Elon Musk<\/a>) who saw the government lose interest in enforcement as they got closer to the administration.<\/p>\n<p>But the Times says only the \u201cpotential\u201d for corruption exists.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the recent matter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2025\/10\/27\/2350324\/news\/Company-tied-to-Don-Jr-randomly-wins-big-Pentagon-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sweetheart Pentagon contract<\/a> that was awarded to Florida-based drone company Unusual Machines. Just coincidentally, Donald Trump Jr. is an investor and serves on the advisory board. The Trump brothers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/5\/6\/800033814\/business-and-economy\/trump-family-crypto-bro-dueling-lawsuits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similarly held<\/a> dinners for their allies in the crypto industry while Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-judiciary.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/new-report-exposes-the-trump-family-s-multi-billion-dollar-crypto-empire-fueled-by-self-dealing-and-corrupt-foreign-interests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled back<\/a> on oversight of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Related |<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/4\/10\/2377173\/news\/barron-trump-gets-in-on-the-family-grift\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/4\/10\/2377173\/news\/barron-trump-gets-in-on-the-family-grift\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barron Trump gets in on the family grift<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other Trump family members like Donald\u2019s son Barron Trump and granddaughter Kai Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/4\/10\/2377173\/news\/barron-trump-gets-in-on-the-family-grift\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have also used<\/a> the family\u2019s access to the White House as a springboard for profitable business ventures.<\/p>\n<p>But there is only \u201cpotential\u201d for corruption.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/hunter-biden-embassy-romania.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reporting a few years<\/a> ago on industry connections that Hunter Biden made while invoking his father, former President Joe Biden, the Times labeled his dealings \u201caudacious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, the Biden family deserves scrutiny as much as any other powerful political family and their interactions with big business. But unlike the Trumps, Hunter Biden was not flying around the world with his father and simultaneously hobnobbing with businesses seeking access.<br \/>The Times is engaged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/4\/6\/2376583\/news\/ny-times-once-again-caught-sanewashing-trump-s-unhinged-rhetoric\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a concerted campaign<\/a> to sanewash Trump and to normalize his unprecedented behavior\u2014including calls for violence and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2025\/9\/16\/2343832\/news\/The-New-York-Times-has-done-so-much-for-Trump-but-it-s-never-enough\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support for corruption<\/a>.
