Gavin Newsom once again ducked questions about his plans for life after state service as he terms out of office at the end of this year and cannot run again.<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer and gave a sheepish grin when asked by reporters if he planned to run for president in 2028 after <a data-ylk=\"slk:presenting his final May revised budget proposal on Thursday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article315743952.html#storylink=latest_side\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">presenting his final May revised budget proposal on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need healthcare. I worry about that,\u201d Newsom said of his potential job prospects. Like his predecessor Gov. Jerry Brown, Newsom intends to leave Sacramento with a balanced budget; his is largely contingent upon revenues from artificial intelligence companies.<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing governor has long been floated as a potential presidential candidate dating back to 2004, when he made his first national headlines as San Francisco mayor for <a data-ylk=\"slk:flouting state law and then-President George W. Bush;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120316005541\/http:\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=%2Fc%2Fa%2F2004%2F02%2F15%2FMNGMN51F8Q1.DTL\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">flouting state law and then-President George W. Bush<\/a> by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The <a data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cWinter of Love\u201d lasted for a month;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/02\/san-francisco-winter-of-love-20-year-anniversary\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWinter of Love\u201d lasted for a month<\/a> before the California Supreme Court intervened.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom will leave public sector employment on Jan. 4, 2027 for the first time since 1996, when he entered San Francisco politics as president of the city Parking and Traffic Commission. In the last year, he has sought to reintroduce himself nationally by <a data-ylk=\"slk:publishing a memoir;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article314805212.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">publishing a memoir<\/a>, <a data-ylk=\"slk:visiting battleground political states;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article309953930.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">visiting battleground political states<\/a>, and championing a <a data-ylk=\"slk:partisan redistricting effort;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article312759766.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">partisan redistricting effort<\/a> to break the GOP\u2019s congressional majority.<\/p>\n<p>He has <a data-ylk=\"slk:refused to endorse a successor in the ongoing governor\u2019s race;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article315687606.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">refused to endorse a successor in the ongoing governor\u2019s race<\/a>. On Thursday, he alluded to behind-the-scenes conversations with state party leaders, saying \u201cwe\u2019re going to do everything to make sure\u201d two Republicans don\u2019t advance out of the June 2 primary in which the top two vote-getters will advance to the general election.<\/p>\n<p>California voters have not elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger won reelection in 2006. And Democrats have held a legislative supermajority for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t anticipate this to be the case, but there is a break-the-glass scenario\u201d in case a Republican victory seems likely, Newsom said. \u201cThere are many people that have a deep understanding of what it would look like if Democrats were locked out.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Thu, May 14, 2026 at 9:41 PM UTC Gov.
