President Donald Trump<\/a> lashed out at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer<\/a> (D-N.Y.) as he demanded the legislator apologize for saying \u201cnobody respects\u201d Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow! Cryin\u2019 Chuck Schumer just said, for the whole World to hear, that \u2018NOBODY RESPECTS BORDER PATROL OR ICE,\u2019\u201d the president posted<\/a>\u00a0on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is one of the most egregious, incorrect, unpatriotic, and dangerous statements I have EVER heard from a \u2018professional\u2019 politician,\u201d he went on. \u201cHE MUST IMMEDIATELY APOLOGIZE TO THESE GREAT PATRIOTS, AND I MEAN NOW!\u201d<\/p>\n

Schumer made the disparaging comments<\/a> about immigration authorities Wednesday while opposing Senate Republicans\u2019 push to fund the Department of Homeland Security after a monthslong shutdown.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday,\u00a0Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin<\/a> announced that the agency was set to run out of money<\/a> to cover its payroll by the first week of May.<\/p>\n

He accused Democrats of \u201cputting homeland at risk\u201d with their February decision to block funding to the department as they demanded reforms in response to public uproar over agents fatally shooting<\/a>\u00a0two American citizens<\/a>\u00a0in January in Minneapolis, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

DHS employees, which include the Transportation Security Administration agents who oversee U.S. airports, were forced to work without pay<\/a> for weeks before Trump directed the department to tap into\u00a0$10 billion allocated to border security in the Republican-backed spending package that was passed last July.<\/p>\n
