WASHINGTON\u00a0 \u2014 Vice President JD Vance said May 19 during a press briefing at the White House that he is \u201clooking forward to reading\u201d Pope Leo XIV\u2019s upcoming first encyclical, \u201cMagnifica Humanitas,\u201d addressing artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think when the pope<\/a> issues an encyclical on artificial intelligence, it\u2019s going to have some influence,\u201d Vance said in response to a question on the topic, adding, \u201cI, of course, don\u2019t know how much influence. I don\u2019t know exactly what it\u2019s going to say, but I think when the leader of the world\u2019s largest Christian denomination speaks on an issue like that, it\u2019s certainly going to have some influence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The title of the encyclical is Latin for \u201cMagnificent Humanity,\u201d and it will address artificial intelligence and human dignity, the Vatican has announced. It will be published May 25.<\/p>\n

Vance said he is sure the encyclical will \u201ccontain a lot of insights, some of which I\u2019ll probably agree with, some of which I may not, but I think that it\u2019s going to be a very, very important document.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to a related question on whether the government should create a new mandatory review process for new AI models, Vance<\/a> argued that President Donald Trump \u201cwants us to be pro-innovation\u201d on AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants us to win the AI race against all other countries in the world,\u201d Vance said. \u201cHe recognizes that AI is going to be an important tool, not just for our economy, but for our military, and so he wants to ensure that we are winning that particular race. We also want to make sure that we\u2019re protecting people, we\u2019re protecting people\u2019s data, we\u2019re protecting people\u2019s privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Vance also acknowledged the technology \u201cdoes have some downsides.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to balance that safety against innovation, and we think that we\u2019ve got the right balance here in the Trump administration, but something we\u2019re going to have to keep on working on, because that\u2019s just the nature of these technologies, is they certainly change,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Pope Leo has consistently expressed interest in the issue of artificial intelligence and the dignity of work since the first days of his pontificate<\/a>, telling the College of Cardinals shortly after his election in May 2025 that he took his papal name partly in honor of Pope Leo XIII, whose landmark encyclical \u201cRerum Novarum\u201d has shaped the Church\u2019s social teaching for more than a century.<\/p>\n
