Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> told employees in an internal memo on Wednesday that he does not expect more company-wide layoffs this year, reports news agency Reuters. The tech billionaire’s remarks came after the company announced a new round of global cuts with about 10% of its workforce being affected in the first major wave. At the same time, the company said that around 7,000 employees would be moved to new AI-focused initiatives.<\/p>\n

“I want to be clear that we do not expect other company-wide layoffs this year. I also want to \u2060acknowledge that \u200cwe haven’t been as clear as we aspire to be in our communication, and that’s \u2060one area I want to make sure we improve,” he said in the memo.
But ex-employees of the company, who were laid off recently, warned of more layoffs in the future. There were reports that Meta is planning another round of layoffs in August this year.<\/p>\n

According to her, she had already been expecting her role to eventually disappear as artificial intelligence continues to reshape the tech industry.

Pierson said she had been mentally preparing for the possibility of layoffs for a long time, especially as AI tools increasingly began handling work once done by human content designers. \u201cIf you survive, then you need to start training yourself on an entirely new role that AI can\u2019t replace \u2014 all while mentally preparing yourself for the next layoff, which, by the way, is rumored to be happening in August,\u201d Pierson said on Instagram. \u201cThat\u2019s not normal. It\u2019s not healthy,\u201d she added in the two-minute video.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be clear that we do not expect other company-wide layoffs this year,\u201d Zuckerberg said, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also want to acknowledge that we haven\u2019t been as clear as we aspire to be in our communication, and that\u2019s one area I want to make sure we improve.\u201d<\/p>\n

‘He’s focussed on bottom line’A Meta employee affected by Wednesday\u2019s layoffs told New York the company will likely do a \u201cperformance-based\u201d round of layoffs later this year, \u201cso they can label it as not a mass layoff.\u201d Asked about Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s reputation internally, the worker didn\u2019t mince words.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t give a s\u2013t,\u201d the person said. \u201cHe\u2019s focused on his bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n

The employee said morale inside Meta has cratered amid fears of AI wiping out jobs across the tech industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it has the security or longevity that it used to,\u201d the employee said. \u201cI think people are going to be making big career pivots right now to just escape tech.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past, if you got laid off from Meta, you could go and jump to another company like Google, Amazon or these other big tech companies,\u201d the worker added.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut now with this layoff, knowing that it is because of AI, you can jump to one of those other companies, but you could also end up being laid off there six months later.\u201d<\/p>\n

The employee also described mounting internal pressure to incorporate Meta\u2019s in-house AI tools into day-to-day work \u2014 even when it meant replacing tasks that workers felt capable of doing themselves.<\/p>\n
