{"id":8186,"date":"2026-04-04T05:12:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T05:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/8186\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T05:12:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T05:12:18","slug":"chief-justice-roberts-calls-for-personal-criticism-of-judges-to-stop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/8186\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Justice Roberts calls for personal criticism of judges to stop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Supreme Court <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/john-roberts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Justice John Roberts<\/a> warned Tuesday that personal criticism of federal judges is dangerous and \u201cit\u2019s got to stop,\u201d two days after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> called a federal judge who ruled against the administration \u201cwacky, nasty, crooked and totally out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he has done before, Roberts was careful not to single out Trump or anyone else, insisting that the attacks on judges are not from \u201cjust any one political perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Criticism of judicial opinions \u201ccomes with the territory\u201d and can be healthy, Roberts said in remarks at Rice University\u2019s Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston. <\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s different when the criticism moves away from legal analysis. \u201cPersonally directed hostility is dangerous and it\u2019s got to stop,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal, who shared the stage with the chief justice, thanked Roberts because \u201cwe always know that you have our backs and that means a great deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Marshals Service, responsible for protecting judges, reported 564 threats in the government fiscal year that ended in September, up from the year before. Roberts acknowledged the \u201cserious threats\u201d by noting Congress has responded by increasing funding for judges\u2019 security.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s most recent comments about judges came Sunday in a post on his Truth Social <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/feeral-reserve-trump-0fdd36447a6aa8ae3e7125930d03950f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following a ruling<\/a> by U.S. District Judge James Boasberg quashing subpoenas the Justice Department had issued to the Federal Reserve. <\/p>\n<p>Boasberg, Trump wrote, is \u201ca Wacky, Nasty, Crooked, and totally Out of Control Judge\u201d who \u201csuffers from the highest level of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS), and has been \u2018after\u2019 my people, and me, for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Roberts publicly rejected Trump\u2019s call for Boasberg\u2019s impeachment when the judge blocked additional deportations to a notorious prison in El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p>The president also has been highly critical of Roberts and the five other justices <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-tariffs-trump-0485fcda30a7310501123e4931dba3f9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who struck down global tariffs<\/a> he imposed under an emergency powers law. Trump said he was \u201cabsolutely ashamed\u201d of the members of the court who ruled against him, questioning their patriotism and singling out two of his own appointees, Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s allies and administration officials also have joined in the criticism. After U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston on Monday blocked the administration\u2019s effort to reshape vaccines policy, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche noted that other rulings from Murphy had been upended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times can Judge Murphy get reversed in one year? The same day he is stayed for repeatedly refusing to follow the law, he issues another activist decision. We will keep appealing these lawless decisions, and we will keep winning.
