{"id":82129,"date":"2026-05-22T12:06:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/82129\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T12:06:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:06:08","slug":"pushed-to-the-limit-republicans-show-rare-defiance-to-trumps-demands-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/82129\/","title":{"rendered":"Pushed to the limit, Republicans show rare defiance to Trump&#8217;s demands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">WASHINGTON \u2013 The day arrived when <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-billion-ballroom-trump-funding-bill-republicans-d0b0d2ee59a95f6199d80998ab89d7e4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Senate just said, No<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> political <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-takeaways-massie-kentucky-georgia-alabama-8eb9f54741ce0313ab15b291bd742c16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revenge tour<\/a> met its potential match this week as angry, upset Republican senators, pushed to a breaking point by his seemingly insatiable and outlandish demands \u2014 particularly a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-lawsuit-irs-leak-3729de38770b558be01712a143437bf8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1.776 billion fund<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/irs-trump-settlement-tax-returns-police-capitol-riot-fc73eb5f35481bb6d8892ac1e14e98bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jan. 6 rioters<\/a> and others he believes were wrongly prosecuted \u2014 did the unthinkable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">They simply refused, closed up shop, and went home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The moment was as rare as it was daring, a sudden flex from the Congress that has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-house-republicans-speaker-mike-johnson-f33caf02251b5c8514e9014c865ea784\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shell of its former self<\/a> as a coequal branch, the Republican majority almost always more willing to accommodate the Republican president than to confront him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The result left in shambles, for now, the GOP&#8217;s top priority of passing a roughly $70 billion budget package that would fuel Trump\u2019s immigration and deportation operations for the remainder of his presidential term, into 2029. The voting was postponed until Congress resumes next month, blowing Trump&#8217;s June 1 deadline to have it on his desk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Trump, asked during an event at the Oval Office if he was losing control of the Senate, shrugged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI really don&#8217;t know,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It all caps a bruising week after the president swept midterm primary elections, taking down one Republican after another \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cassidy-senate-louisiana-trump-loss-63ba36b3a4200c74baa0fdfedbd52412\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-thomas-massie-9561ac5dcf4dc3af932b2e8f781264da\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky<\/a>, and endorsing the challenger to Sen. John Cornyn in Texas \u2014 turning the might of his Make America Great Again movement against those who have stuck to their own views, rather than yield to his.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And it wasn\u2019t just the Senate. In the Republican-led House, for the first time this year, enough GOP lawmakers broke ranks to signal support for a war powers resolution from Democrats designed to halt Trump\u2019s military action in Iran. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/mike-johnson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a> postponed voting until he could ensure an outcome that avoids confronting the president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The endgame leaves Trump and the party exposed in new ways. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While the president is winning with his handpicked candidates, many are untested heading into general elections this fall. Trump&#8217;s own approval rating sits at a low point, and he is spending his political capital, alienating his would-be allies and threatening to detail GOP priorities as they try to persuade voters to keep them in office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Anger in the Senate over Trump&#8217;s \u2018payout for punks\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Trump&#8217;s announcement of nearly $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund for those the president believes were wrongly prosecuted came with little warning, and less support, blindsiding senators already fuming over his push for $1 billion to provide security for his new White House ballroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The audacity of the arrangement \u2014 Trump negotiating a settlement to his own lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service that would set up the compensation fund for those perceived to be wrongly prosecuted \u2014 proved too toxic for the Senate to bear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cUnder what circumstances would it ever makes sense to provide restitution for people who were either pled guilty or were found guilty in a court of law?\u201d steamed Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Tillis derided the White House move as \u201cstupid on stilts\u201d and a \u201cpayout for punks.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the former majority leader, who tends to keep his own counsel, issued his own a statement in the aftermath. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSo the nation\u2019s top law enforcement official is asking for a slush fund to pay people who assault cops? Utterly stupid, morally wrong \u2014 Take your pick,\u201d McConnell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The political calculations were becoming apparent: The more Trump bullies and badgers the Congress, the more they are left questioning what they have to gain, or lose, from trying to appease him, especially for those already heading for the exits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think it\u2019s hard to divorce anything that happens here from what\u2019s happening in the political atmosphere around us,\u201d said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche met for hours behind closed doors with senators over the compensation fund, but left without a resolution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Afterward, Thune said the discussion likely left the administration\u2019s team with \u201can appreciation for the depth of feeling on the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Trump&#8217;s victories come at a cost<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While Trump-backed candidates defeated Republican incumbents in the House and Senate this week, showing his command of the party faithful, some in Congress saw the defeats of their colleagues differently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou don\u2019t want to have a totally loyal party that\u2019s in the minority. And that&#8217;s maybe where we\u2019re headed,\u201d said Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, who is retiring at the end of his term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It began Saturday, when Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump in his Senate impeachment trial after Jan. 6, lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger in Louisiana. He returned to Washington days later noticeably more eager to criticize Trump \u2014 and more willing to vote against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cCongress should hold the executive branch accountable,\u201d Cassidy said Monday. A day later, he joined Democrats in voting to rein in the war in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Then came Trump\u2019s endorsement of Ken Paxton over Cornyn in Texas, a move many Republicans viewed as both personal and politically reckless. Trump said Cornyn \u201cwas not supportive of me when times were tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of folks in our conference that are disappointed because we appreciate working with John Cornyn,\u201d said Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Others worried the divisive Texas primary could jeopardize a seat Republicans cannot afford to lose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHe made the wrong pick,\u201d Tillis said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a lot more expensive to hold that seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Frustration extends beyond the Senate<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the House there were also signs of Republican discontent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., joined Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi in introducing legislation that would block taxpayer dollars from being used for Trump\u2019s proposed \u201canti-weaponization\u201d compensation fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Fitzpatrick also drew Trump\u2019s ire after the president complained publicly that the congressman \u201clikes voting against Trump\u201d and warned, \u201cYou know what happens with that?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But Fitzpatrick insisted the backlash inside the party was driven by policy concerns, not political fear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cPeople have the right to free speech in this country,\u201d Fitzpatrick said. \u201cBut what we do here is all about policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">At the same time, Fitzpatrick and Republican Michigan Rep. Tom Barrett were expected to side with Democrats in voting for the war powers resolution to rein in Trump\u2019s military campaign in Iran. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">GOP leaders pulled the measure at the last minute when it became clear Republicans lacked the votes to defeat it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bacon, who spent some 30 years on active duty in the Air Force, said he believed much of the Republican pushback to the war could be resolved if Trump consulted Congress more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou sit down with somebody, and work with them instead of threatening, bully and yelling,\u201d said Bacon. \u201cIt don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
