{"id":84768,"date":"2026-05-24T07:42:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T07:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/84768\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T07:42:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T07:42:25","slug":"mass-protests-erupt-in-madrid-over-corruption-allegations-against-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/84768\/","title":{"rendered":"Mass protests erupt in Madrid over corruption allegations against PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MADRID, Spain\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Thousands of people marched through the streets of Madrid on Saturday calling for Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to resign over allegations of corruption within his entourage.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators, many waving red and yellow Spanish flags and brandishing signs saying &#8220;Enough!&#8221;, made their way through the streets of Madrid behind a large banner that read: &#8220;Corruption has a price. No more impunity. Resignation and elections now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The protest was called by a group of over 150 civic associations called Sociedad Civil Espanola and backed by the mainstream conservative Popular Party (PP) and far-right Vox.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers put attendance at 120,000.<\/p>\n<p>The central government&#8217;s delegate to the region estimated 40,000 people had turned out for the march, which ended in Plaza Moncloa near Sanchez&#8217;s official residence.<\/p>\n<p>Get the latest news<br \/>\n                <br class=\"br-line\"\/><br \/>\n                delivered to your inbox<\/p>\n<p>Sign up for The Manila Times newsletters<\/p>\n<p>            By signing up with an email address, I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manilatimes.net\/terms-of-service\" title=\"Terms of Service\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terms of Service<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manilatimes.net\/privacy-policy\" title=\"Privacy Policy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After the march ended, a small group of demonstrators tried to head towards the residence but were pushed back by riot police, images on Spanish TV showed.<\/p>\n<p>Three people were arrested and seven police officers suffered minor injuries, according to the central government&#8217;s delegate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no-one left in Pedro Sanchez&#8217;s circle who has not been accused of very serious crimes.
