Speaking to The Sunday Times<\/a>, Sir Sadiq said: \u201cI\u2019m sad, because the promises made in July 2024 haven\u2019t been delivered. I think even Keir would accept that.\u201d<\/p>\n In the May 7 elections, Labour lost almost 1,500 councillors across England, and lost control of Wales for the first time.<\/p>\n The heavy losses were primarily to Reform UK<\/a> in much of the Red Wall, but Labour also saw voters abandon them to the Left in favour of the Greens, particularly in London.<\/p>\n Sir Sadiq Khan, who has said now is not the time for a Labour leadership contest, entering Downing Street for a meeting on anti-Semitism two days before the local elections – Leon Neal\/Getty Images<\/p>\n Sir Sadiq said he feared the \u201chard work\u201d that Labour councils in the capital had achieved would \u201ccrumble away because of the unpopularity of the national Labour Government\u201d.<\/p>\n The Mayor of London was at the Prime Minister\u2019s side at Sir Keir\u2019s first public event after he delivered his \u201creset\u201d speech <\/a>following the local elections, which was widely seen as falling short of what he needed to do to keep MPs on side.<\/p>\n Asked how Sir Keir seemed when they visited a Metropolitan Police station to discuss the policing of protests in London, Sir Sadiq said: \u201cSome people believe the PM\u2019s speech on Monday was enough. Not for me.\u201d<\/p>\n However, he also said the leadership crisis that followed the local election results had left him \u201cembarrassed\u201d, and appeared to criticise Wes Streeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mr Streeting resigned as health secretary after declaring that he had lost confidence in Sir Keir, and is preparing to launch his own leadership campaign.<\/p>\n \u2018Headless chickens\u2019 embarrassing for Labour<\/p>\n Sir Sadiq told the Sunday Times: \u201cHeadless chicken behaviour by some members of the Government has been disappointing.<\/p>\n \u201cSome of the politicians should know better. I\u2019m embarrassed by how it\u2019s making the Labour Party look.\u201d<\/p>\n Sir Sadiq has stood by Sir Keir so far, insisting that it is not the time for a Labour leadership contest, while acknowledging that the Prime Minister has to change course.<\/p>\n Despite this, he was very complimentary towards Mr Burnham, who is hoping to return to the Commons as Labour\u2019s candidate in the Makerfield by-election<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI think Andy\u2019s been incredibly brave to stand in a seat many experts believe he\u2019ll lose<\/a>. That shows the kind of guy Andy is.
