But for the chipmaker\u2019s over 42,000 workers, success comes with high expectations.<\/p>\n<p>According to CEO <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/29\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-engineering-path-to-success-ai-era-gen-z-advice-ieee-medal-of-honor-winner\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/29\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-engineering-path-to-success-ai-era-gen-z-advice-ieee-medal-of-honor-winner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jensen Huang<\/a>, part of Nvidia\u2019s edge stems from a management style he\u2019s described as <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/09\/05\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-torture-employees-to-greatness-culture\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/09\/05\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-torture-employees-to-greatness-culture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">torturous<\/a>\u2014one he said he learned, in part, from his Taiwanese parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[To a] Taiwanese parent, nothing is ever good enough, and you can\u2019t go a day without some criticism,\u201d he told <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-QQLU7ksuHQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-QQLU7ksuHQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Singapore-based news channel CNA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m kind of the same way. You can\u2019t show me something without me giving you some criticism. And I guess in a lot of ways that\u2019s my form of torture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huang said he believes feedback works best when delivered immediately, and with improvement (not punishment) in mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like a Taiwanese parent, once the feedback is given, you\u2019re back to loving the person again,\u201d Huang said. \u201cAnd so, I\u2019m always critical of everybody\u2019s work so that I can help them be better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s brutal culture appears to be working: employees stay for years, while Jensen Huang works seven days a week<\/p>\n<p>Huang pointed to Nvidia\u2019s high retention rates as evidence that the demanding culture works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During fiscal year 2025, Nvidia\u2019s overall turnover was just 2.5%, according to the company\u2019s latest <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/aem-dam\/Solutions\/documents\/NVIDIA-Sustainability-Report-Fiscal-Year-2025.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/aem-dam\/Solutions\/documents\/NVIDIA-Sustainability-Report-Fiscal-Year-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sustainability report<\/a>. Roughly one in five employees have been with the company for at least a decade, while two in five have stayed for five years or longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t quit easily from Nvidia,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026I think that ultimately the purpose of leadership is to create the conditions for other people to realize their dreams, to be part of yours of course and to be part of something bigger, but to be able to turn their job, their profession, their craft hopefully into their life\u2019s work. And at NVIDIA you could do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plus, even though Huang has sky-high expectations for Nvidia employees, he appears to hold himself to an ever tougher standard.<\/p>\n<p>The 63-year-old billionaire has not only acknowledged he isn\u2019t big on work-life balance. He works seven days a week\u2014<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/27\/nvidia-employees-stress-pressure-work-place-stock-grants-wealth\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/27\/nvidia-employees-stress-pressure-work-place-stock-grants-wealth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including weekends and holidays<\/a>\u2014driven in part by fear that Nvidia, the company he <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-dennys-dishwasher-most-powerful-person-business\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-dennys-dishwasher-most-powerful-person-business\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cofounded at a Denny\u2019s booth in 1993<\/a>, could <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/04\/nvidia-ceo-admits-he-works-7-days-a-week-including-holidays-in-a-constant-state-of-anxiety-out-of-fear-of-going-bankrupt\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/04\/nvidia-ceo-admits-he-works-7-days-a-week-including-holidays-in-a-constant-state-of-anxiety-out-of-fear-of-going-bankrupt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fail at any moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But even as many people his age begin thinking about retirement, Huang said stepping away isn\u2019t on his radar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to work as long as I can,\u201d he told CNA. \u201cI hope to die on the job. That would be a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Huang\u2019s aggressive approach to work has been successful. In its <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/05\/20\/nvidia-q1-earnings-forecast-dividend-stock-buybacks\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/05\/20\/nvidia-q1-earnings-forecast-dividend-stock-buybacks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most recent quarterly earnings report<\/a>, released last week, Nvidia\u2019s revenue hit a record $81.6 billion\u2014up 20% from the previous quarter and up 85% from a year ago. The company\u2019s success has largely been fueled by the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/28\/mega-ai-data-centers-boom-bust-nvidia\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/28\/mega-ai-data-centers-boom-bust-nvidia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boom in data centers<\/a>, where revenue climbed to $75.2 billion, up 92% year over year.<\/p>\n<p>Huang\u2019s net worth is <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jenhsun-huang\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jenhsun-huang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">estimated<\/a> at $178 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Fortune reached out to Nvidia for further comment.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Su and Steve Jobs have demanding leadership styles too<\/p>\n<p>Huang isn\u2019t the only Silicon Valley executive to argue that growth often comes from discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Rival tech CEO <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/12\/18\/lisa-su-amd-ceo-share-price-jensen-huang\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/12\/18\/lisa-su-amd-ceo-share-price-jensen-huang\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Su<\/a>\u2014who is also a distant cousin of Huang\u2014has spoken openly about the importance of leaning into difficult challenges rather than avoiding them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRun towards the hardest problems\u2014not walk, run\u2014and that\u2019s where you find the biggest opportunities, where you learn the most, where you set yourself apart, and most importantly, where you grow,\u201d the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/advanced-micro-devices\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/advanced-micro-devices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AMD<\/a> leader <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/14\/amd-ceo-lisa-su-gen-z-college-graduates-advice-run-to-challenges-fast-track-promotions\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/14\/amd-ceo-lisa-su-gen-z-college-graduates-advice-run-to-challenges-fast-track-promotions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a commencement address last year<\/a>, recalling the best career advice she ever received.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you choose the hardest challenges, you choose the fastest path to growth and the greatest chance to make a difference,\u201d Su added.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that demanding leaders can bring out the best in employees was also echoed by the late Steve Jobs, who was <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/28\/mickey-drexler-gap-ceo-management-style-steve-jobs-micromanaging\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/28\/mickey-drexler-gap-ceo-management-style-steve-jobs-micromanaging\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known for his uncompromising standards<\/a> at <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job is to not be easy on people,\u201d Jobs <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2008\/03\/17\/what-makes-apple-golden\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2008\/03\/17\/what-makes-apple-golden\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Fortune in a 2008 interview<\/a>. \u201cMy job is to take these great people we have and to push them and make them even better. How?
