I was in the room when House Democratic Leader U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> stood before hundreds of community members and local leaders at an open event in Connecticut\u2019s First District.<\/p>\n

The energy was undeniable. The crowd reflected the full fabric of our district, across race, generation, and background, and the room was filled with families, union workers, young people, and activists.<\/p>\n

I was there as a member of Voices of Women of Color<\/a>, alongside fellow members and friends, and I was proud to witness it firsthand. What I saw wasn\u2019t a politician passing through. It was leadership and community engagement in action. And the fact that this gathering took place during Black History Month made it impossible to ignore the history unfolding in front of us.<\/p>\n

For many of us in the Black community, this moment carries even deeper meaning.<\/p>\n

Leader Jeffries stands on the brink of history. If Democrats win back the House majority, he would become the first Black Speaker of the House of Representatives. That matters. It matters to our children. It matters to our elders who marched and organized and sacrificed for representation that once felt impossible. And it matters right now, at a time when our democracy is under direct attack.<\/p>\n

We should also recognize who made this moment possible: U.S. Rep. John Larson. Leaders don\u2019t just show up by accident. They come because they respect the member who represents that community and trust the partnership that has been built over time.<\/p>\n

Congressman Larson has brought national leaders here before, from Presidents Obama and Biden, to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the late, great John Lewis, because it is important that leaders in Congress hear directly from the people they serve.<\/p>\n

Our congressman has consistently leveraged his authority and relationships to ensure Connecticut\u2019s First District has a seat at the table in Washington \u2014 and that seat has translated into billions of dollars in investment back home.<\/p>\n

Those investments have strengthened our infrastructure, expanded affordable housing, supported our schools, and created good-paying union jobs throughout the First District and across Connecticut.<\/p>\n

Some may try to twist Leader Jeffries\u2019 visit or suggest he was here for the wrong reasons. But those claims simply don\u2019t hold up, especially not in communities that understand what representation and accountability look like.<\/p>\n

We know what it means when a national leader shows up. We know the difference between someone who flies in for a photo and someone who takes the time to listen, answer questions, and talk plainly about the stakes in front of us.<\/p>\n

While Donald Trump is threatening to undermine our elections, using ICE as his personal army, and trampling all over our Constitution, now is not the time to attack fellow Democrats who are on the front lines of this fight. Leader Jeffries has been clear and forceful in standing up to Trump\u2019s extremism, and when he comes to our district to talk about protecting voting rights, lowering costs, strengthening workers\u2019 rights, expanding affordable housing, and defending Social Security, that is not about money. That\u2019s about winning and governing.<\/p>\n

Democrats\u2019 newfound unity faces a test after US and Israeli strikes on Iran<\/a><\/p>\n

Reducing engagement with voters to \u201che\u2019s only here to raise money\u201d is a blatant lie and ignores the reality of how campaigns and leadership actually work. You don\u2019t defeat Trump by sitting at home. You defeat him by showing up, building support, and strengthening the movement in communities across the country, including ours. We deserve that and I\u2019m thankful Congressman Larson made that happen.<\/p>\n

At a time when so many are quick to divide and distract or use this moment for their own ambition, Congressman Larson remains focused on what actually matters, delivering for Connecticut\u2019s First District, strengthening the Democratic coalition, and taking on Donald Trump at every step.<\/p>\n

Whether it was when he was named as an \u201cICE agitator\u201d to Trump\u2019s \u201cwatch list\u201d<\/a> alongside members like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for taking on ICE, or when he forcefully attacked Musk and DOGE for going after Medicare and Social Security, Congressman Larson has never been afraid to stand up and speak out. He has taken the fight directly to Trump and those enabling his extremism, while still doing the hard work of legislating and delivering real results for our district.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the kind of leadership we deserve, serious, strong, and focused on winning the fights that matter, not petty infighting that only weakens us when unity is what this moment demands.<\/p>\n

As Leader Jeffries said, Trump and his allies are working overtime to sow chaos and division. They are threatening the integrity of our elections and the rights so many fought to secure. At this moment, unity is not optional, it is necessary.<\/p>\n

The real battle is against the extremism, corruption, and authoritarian impulses coming from Trump and those who enable him.<\/p>\n

When Leader Jeffries came to Connecticut\u2019s First District, he didn\u2019t just speak. He listened. He connected. He affirmed that this district matters in the national fight ahead.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s keep our focus where it belongs.<\/p>\n
