Apple\u00a0on Monday announced its senior vice president of hardware engineering as its\u00a0successor to\u00a0CEO\u00a0Tim Cook<\/a>, who helmed the California-based company for more than a decade.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0selection\u00a0of\u00a0John Ternus, who will assume his new role<\/a>\u00a0on Sept. 1\u00a0to ensure a smooth transition,\u00a0was\u00a0unanimously approved by the Cupertino\u00a0company\u2019s\u00a0board of\u00a0directors\u00a0and \u201cfollows a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process,\u201d\u00a0Apple said in a news release.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too\u00a0numerous\u00a0to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future,\u201d Cook said in the release. \u201cI could not be more confident in his abilities and his character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition and in my new role as executive chairman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ternus said he has spent most of his career at Apple with Cook\u00a0as a mentor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century,\u201d Ternus said in the release.<\/p>\n

Currently,\u00a0Ternus leads the company\u2019s hardware engineering<\/a>\u00a0behind iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro and more, the company said.<\/p>\n

Ternus, 50, has been considered a possible successor to Cook, with profiles in both The New York Times<\/a> and Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He started his career as\u00a0a\u00a0mechanical\u00a0engineer at Virtual Research Systems<\/a> in 1997 after earning a\u00a0bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering\u00a0from the University of Pennsylvania, according to Apple.<\/p>\n

Ternus’ journey at Apple started in 2001 when he joined the company’s design team.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Ternus became the company\u2019s vice president of hardware engineering. Eight years later, he joined the company\u2019s executive team as senior vice president of hardware of engineering.<\/p>\n

During Ternus\u2019 time at Apple, he has \u201coverseen hardware engineering work on a variety of groundbreaking products across every category,\u201d according to Apple.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was instrumental in the introduction of multiple new product lines, including iPad and AirPods, as well as many generations of products across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch,\u201d Apple said.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Ternus\u2019 work on Mac helped the product line become \u201cmore powerful and more popular globally than at any time in its 40-year history,\u201d the company said, adding that his work was pivotal in the recent introduction of MacBook Neo.<\/p>\n

His team\u2019s work was also crucial in the development of \u201credefined\u00a0iPhone lineup\u201d last fall, which included the\u00a0iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone Air, and the iPhone 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder his leadership, his team also drove advancements in AirPods to make them the world\u2019s best in-ear headphones, with unprecedented active noise cancellation, as well as the capability to become an all-in-one hearing health system that can serve as over-the-counter hearing aids,\u201d\u00a0according\u00a0to Apple.<\/p>\n

The company credits Ternus\u2019 work as helping its \u201cfocus in areas like reliability and durability, introducing new techniques that have made Apple products remarkably resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n

His work has also helped drive Apple\u2019s innovation in materials and hardware design to reduce products\u2019 carbon footprint, \u201cincluding the creation of a new, recycled aluminum compound that has been introduced across multiple product lines, the use of 3-D printed titanium in Apple Watch Ultra 3, and innovations in repairability that have increased the lifespans of several Apple products,” the company said.<\/p>\n

Arthur Levinson, who has been Apple\u2019s non-executive chairman for the past 15 years and will become its lead independent director in September, credited Ternus’ “unprecedented and outstanding leadership” as helping transforming “Apple into the world’s best company.”<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s introduced groundbreaking products and services time and again, and his integrity and values are infused into everything Apple does,\u201d Levinson said in a release.<\/p>\n
