Ministers sealed a pact in Warsaw that updates decade-old arrangements and sets joint priorities for mobility, cybersecurity, and maritime defense.

In Warsaw on Wednesday, a ceremonial signing of a new bilateral defense cooperation agreement between Poland and Germany took place. The document was signed by the defense ministers of both countries: Vladyslav Kosiniak-Kamysz and Boris Pistorius.

According to the Ministry of National Defence of Poland, the new document provides for expanding cooperation in cyber security, troop mobility, the development of logistical infrastructure, and security in the Baltic Sea.

The document replaces the previous defense cooperation agreement between the governments of Poland and Germany, signed in Warsaw in June 2011, and systematizes ongoing cooperation taking into account the present security environment in Central and Eastern Europe.

The new provisions cover issues of military mobility, the development of logistical infrastructure, cooperation in the maritime domain, notably in the Baltic Sea, cybersecurity, and space.

According to the Minister of Defence, the parties will also strengthen cooperation in the field of space technologies, the development of military infrastructure, and ensuring troop mobility. He stressed that Warsaw and Berlin bear a joint responsibility for the security of the Baltic region.

Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed gratitude to the German side for the participation of Bundeswehr engineering units in the construction of fortifications for the “Shield of the East” project on the Poland–Belarus border.

According to the press service of the Ministry of National Defence of Poland, the agreement does not contain mutual security guarantees, as in some other bilateral agreements, but outlines a new format of cooperation and the adaptation of the countries’ defense potential to the contemporary challenges of the region.

The agreement between Poland and Germany underscores the two countries’ joint commitments on regional security and strengthens defense cooperation in light of the contemporary challenges in Central and Eastern Europe.
