A US defense letter surprised Warsaw with a swift positive tone, yet officials caution the note stops short of a final commitment.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Warsaw had received a positive signal from Washington about the possible establishment of a permanent U.S. military base on Polish soil. He voiced these words in Brussels, commenting on a letter from U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth regarding the prospects for hosting an American base in Poland.
According to Tusk, he thoroughly reviewed the contents of the document and was pleasantly surprised by Washington’s swift and positive reaction to the Polish authorities’ decision to prepare for hosting a permanent American base.

At the same time, he stressed that the letter is not a final decision.
According to Tusk, the American side frankly notes the need to coordinate additional details and to conduct further consultations.
“We are on a very good path toward obtaining a decision to establish a permanent American base, which would dramatically change the sense of security,” the head of the Polish government stressed.
He expressed hope that further steps in this direction would be taken in the near future.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Poland, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said that Washington was positive about Warsaw’s proposal to establish a permanent American base in Poland.
According to official estimates, as of today in Poland, mostly on a rotational basis, about 10,000 American service members are stationed.
