Poland has received 28 South Korean-made K2 tanks assigned
to the 16th Mechanized Division, which is stationed near the border with
Russia’s Kaliningrad
Oblast.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced
the delivery on Aug. 25, in a post on Twitter.
The delivery is part of a contract Poland and South Korea
signed in August 2025.
The next deliveries will include the K2PL variant, which
will be manufactured partly with Polish components.
“This is an important step toward expanding our industrial
production capabilities and another consistent effort to strengthen Poland’s
security,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote.
According to Onet,
the contract calls for deliveries of 64 K2PL tanks to begin in 2028. Hyundai
Rotem will manufacture three of the tanks in South Korea, while the remaining
61 will be produced by Poland’s Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar Łabędy S.A.
Compared with the original design, the Polish version of the
K2 will include several modifications and upgrades. The tank will have two
layers of protection against drones: an electronic warfare system designed to
jam drones and disrupt their flight paths, and an active protection system
intended to destroy such targets directly.
The tank will also feature reinforced armor and a remotely
operated weapon station equipped with a heavy machine gun. The K2PL will retain
advantages of the original design, including an advanced suspension system with
adjustable ground clearance and an autoloader.
