Leaders held private talks in Gdańsk that opened a confidential path for closer nuclear and defense cooperation. Details remain limited, but cooperation aims to bolster European deterrence.

Warsaw announced its readiness to deepen cooperation with France in the field of nuclear security, particularly regarding nuclear deterrence.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this on Monday during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Gdańsk.

According to him, discussions on security issues in the nuclear sphere are confidential in nature. Poland is among a group of states that expressed interest and accepted France’s invitation to closer cooperation in this field. This is an exclusive circle of countries that understand well the need for European solidarity and sovereignty, as well as the capacity for nuclear deterrence. We will continue these negotiations.

Key Areas of Cooperation

“The discussion about cooperation in the field of nuclear security is, by its nature, confidential. Poland is among a group of states that expressed interest and accepted France’s invitation to closer cooperation in this field. This is a fairly exclusive circle of countries that understand well the need for European solidarity and sovereignty. In the current conditions, this should also relate to the capabilities of nuclear deterrence. We will continue these negotiations.”

– Tusk

According to the prime minister, talks on security and military cooperation are very broad in scope and at the same time concrete. They involve joint military exercises, cooperation in the field of air defense, in particular regarding long-range and highly accurate missiles, which play an important role on the modern theatre of war.

“This cooperation, in our view, is very promising. I can say that our cooperation, from the nuclear sphere to joint training, as well as the presence of French troops on Polish territory, will develop at the highest level. It will be cooperation without any limits and restrictions,” stressed Tusk.

He also suggested that, over time, Poland will become the place responsible for the logistical part of ensuring a ceasefire, and subsequently for lasting peace in Ukraine.

“In their actions there are signs of criminal offenses defined by Article 345 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine ‘Threat or violence against a law enforcement officer’ and Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine ‘Deliberate destruction or damage to property’. The relevant reports have been sent to the National Police”

Poland’s position underscores the desire to deepen partnership with France in the areas of security on the eastern border and support for Ukraine, which the capital authorities see as an important element of European solidarity and regional stability.

In conclusion, it is worth noting: developing cooperation in nuclear and defense affairs with France can strengthen the security context in the region and support efforts to assist Ukraine, while also underscoring Poland’s aspiration for an active role in the European security system.
