The outcry comes in response to the Board of Trustees of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC), which proposed the relocation due to concerns about deficiencies in the building and the cost of renovating the facility.
The estimated cost to build a new library ranged between $6.7 million and $9.9 million according to the board’s estimates.
The cost of renovations is estimated at $7.3 million.
The council passed a resolution to ask the Board of Trustees not to move the Poland facility in agreement with the residents.
“I think this is one of the few issues in the community that are bringing all sides together; it’s not often that you see a lot of people agreeing on something that needs to happen,” said Village Councilwoman Laurie Laplante.
The PLYMC board meets on Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in the Main Library on 305 Wick Ave in Youngstown.
Several Poland councilmen and residents indicated they would attend the meeting.
