PKP Cargo, which is currently undergoing restructuring, is entering the military mobility sector in Poland by signing an agreement with the Ministry of National Defense.
The partnership establishes a framework for cooperation to develop the logistics and transport capabilities used by the Polish Armed Forces, in the context of the current tense geopolitical changes.
The document aims to develop rail transport for military equipment and heavy machinery, the use of terminal infrastructure and industrial lines operated by PKP Cargo, as well as the use of locomotives capable of running on non-electrified lines. Additionally, the agreement includes solutions regarding security, communications, and rapid response in crisis situations.
Military mobility in Poland becomes a priority
Polish Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the new agreement plays a key role in preparing the infrastructure for the rapid deployment of Polish and allied troops.
“Today’s agreement allows for the preparation of strategic infrastructure for the deployment of our troops and those of our allies. Military mobility is currently one of the key issues within NATO and the European Union. It defines our development directions, our ability to move, and the efficiency of carrying out various operations. Poland is a leader in this field,” Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated at the signing of the agreement.
The official emphasized that Poland is already collaborating with Germany and the Netherlands to facilitate the rapid movement of troops and build a new security architecture in the Baltic Sea region, where rail infrastructure and logistical connections have become essential for the European military mobility sector.
Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak stated that the agreement clearly regulates cooperation between PKP Cargo, the Ministry of Defense, and the Polish military, restoring the company to a strategic position for the national economy and security.
“Thus, PKP Cargo returns to a strategic role, not only as a pillar of the Polish economy but also as an essential element of national security and defense. It is a very good day for the Polish railway and for national security,” said Dariusz Klimczak, Minister of Infrastructure.
Investments for Poland’s military mobility sector
The Polish Ministry of National Defense has expressed its support for the development of the resources and investments necessary for dual-use transport, including projects that can benefit from funding dedicated to defense needs.
Cooperation may include initiatives regarding the transport of heavy military equipment and the security of rail transport for military units both within Poland and beyond the country’s borders.
The agreement is a framework agreement, concluded for an indefinite period, and does not entail direct financial obligations between the parties. Specific projects will be established later through separate agreements.
Through this partnership, Poland is strengthening its strategic railway infrastructure and consolidating its position in the European military mobility sector, which is considered increasingly important for the security and response capabilities of NATO and the European Union.
