The Armed Forces of Poland have officially received the MikroSAR radar reconnaissance satellite system, a program regarded as strategic by the Polish Ministry of National Defence and one that marks the country’s definitive entry into the small group of European nations possessing sovereign military space intelligence capabilities. The handover ceremony took place on May 15 at the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Secretary of State Cezary Tomczyk.
The system was supplied by a consortium led by ICEYE —through its Polish subsidiary— and also comprising Military Communications Works No. 1, a company belonging to Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ). Simultaneously, Poland’s Armament Agency confirmed the formal transfer of operational control of the system to the Geospatial Reconnaissance and Satellite Services Agency (ARGUS), the organization responsible for the military use of Poland’s space capabilities.
The MikroSAR program had been awarded in May 2025 under a contract valued at approximately $200 million, initially covering three SAR satellites with an option for three additional units, as well as a mobile ground segment and national data processing capabilities. Just one year after contract signature, the system has already been declared operational, in what Polish authorities described as one of the fastest military procurement processes in the country’s recent history.
According to the Polish Ministry of National Defence, four radar satellites were launched into orbit during this period, exceeding the number originally planned for the first phase of the program. The satellites operate in sun-synchronous orbits and are equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), a technology capable of generating high-resolution imagery regardless of weather conditions, cloud cover, or lighting.

According to information released by PGZ, each satellite is capable of generating imagery with resolutions of up to 25 centimeters per pixel, enabling everything from strategic surveillance of large areas to the precise identification of specific targets. The radar’s various operational modes allow the monitoring of borders, maritime areas, and critical infrastructure, while also generating detailed imagery of tactical areas of interest.
During the ceremony, Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the transformative nature of the program for Poland’s ISR capabilities:
“The ability to obtain monochromatic imagery regardless of the time of day or weather conditions, the capability to locate targets or warn about threats with great precision. This is what space-based observation is for. This is why the Polish Armed Forces are present in space. Today, this becomes reality.”
The official also emphasized the priority Warsaw is assigning to emerging technologies associated with multidomain warfare, stating that “drones, counter-drone systems, artificial intelligence, space, and long-range precision capabilities” currently represent the main strategic investment areas for the Polish Armed Forces.
One of the most significant elements of the MikroSAR system is its mobile ground segment, developed jointly with local industry. According to PGZ, the solution integrates communications systems, data transmission, security systems, power supply, and dedicated antenna systems within transportable containers, enabling mission planning, data download, and rapid intelligence dissemination across different command levels.

The incorporation of this architecture will allow Poland to significantly reduce revisit times over areas of interest and obtain sovereign geospatial intelligence for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and support of modern weapon systems. From a doctrinal standpoint, the capability gains particular relevance in the context of NATO’s eastern flank and Europe’s growing emphasis on strategic autonomy and space resilience.
Operational responsibility for the system will now fall under ARGUS, an agency subordinate to the Polish Ministry of National Defence specializing in geospatial and satellite support for military operations. Authorities in Warsaw stressed that the new infrastructure will enable continuous situational awareness capabilities and support potential targeting processes and multidomain operations management.
With MikroSAR entering service, Poland positions itself among the few European countries with its own military space reconnaissance infrastructure based on high-resolution SAR satellites, while also consolidating close cooperation between the state, the national defense industry, and the private technology sector in the development of defense-oriented space capabilities.
