Poland has achieved something few defense procurement programs manage: it signed a contract for a sovereign military satellite reconnaissance capability and brought the system into operational service in less than a year.
The handover of the POLSARIS synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation to the Polish Armed Forces in May 2026 marks not only a technological milestone, but also a significant shift in European defense autonomy.
The system, formally designated the Polish SAR Intelligence System (POLSARIS), was delivered by Finnish-American space technology company ICEYE under the Polish Ministry of National Defence’s MikroSAR program.
The approximately €200 million contract was signed in May 2025. By May 2026, four operational radar satellites had been launched, the ground segment had been completed, military personnel had been trained, and operational control had been transferred to Poland’s Geospatial Reconnaissance and Satellite Services Agency (ARGUS).
Why SAR Satellites Matter
The strategic importance of POLSARIS lies in the technology it employs. Unlike conventional optical reconnaissance satellites, synthetic aperture radar satellites do not depend on daylight or clear weather conditions. Instead, SAR systems actively emit microwave signals toward the Earth’s surface and process the reflected signals into imagery.
This capability allows military operators to monitor targets through cloud cover, rain, smoke, fog, and darkness. In Northern Europe, where cloud cover frequently limits optical surveillance, SAR provides a substantial operational advantage. The satellites can collect intelligence continuously regardless of weather conditions or time of day.
The POLSARIS satellites reportedly achieve image resolutions of up to 25 centimeters, allowing analysts to identify vehicles, monitor military installations, track logistics movements, and assess battle damage with a level of detail suitable for both strategic and tactical intelligence operations.
