{"id":10353,"date":"2026-06-03T18:41:39","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T18:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/10353\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T18:41:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T18:41:39","slug":"central-banks-buy-net-17-tonnes-of-gold-in-april-led-by-poland-and-china-wgc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/10353\/","title":{"rendered":"Central banks buy net 17 tonnes of gold in April, led by Poland and China \u2013 WGC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Kitco News) \u2013 After March saw central banks flip to net sellers of gold, the sovereign sector switched back to bullion purchases in April, according to the latest data from the World Gold Council (WGC).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cCentral banks resumed net gold purchases in April, having bought 17t,\u201d wrote Marissa Salim, the WGC Senior Research Lead, APAC. \u201cThis was a rebound from the sizeable net sales reported in March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"article image\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg preview-image mb-2.5 block w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780512098_642_image.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cPoland remained the top buyer in the month (14t), while China intensified its pace of purchases: its 8t net purchase is the highest since December 2024 and extends its current buying run to 18 consecutive months,\u201d Salim noted. \u201cThe Czech Republic shows similar consistency in purchases, having bought 3t in April, its 38th consecutive monthly purchase. Meanwhile, Russia continues its sales streak this month (6t), with y-t-d sales of 22t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"article image\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg preview-image mb-2.5 block w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780512098_822_image.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Salim said Eastern European and Asian central banks continue to dominate the buying side with consistent monthly purchases. \u201cOver the past 36 months, both regions have purchased 12t and 11t per month on average collectively. Global central banks activity shows average net purchases of 29t over the same period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The National Bank of Poland\u2019s 14 tonnes in purchases \u201cbrings Poland\u2019s y-t-d gold purchases to 45t with its gold reserves at595t or about 30% of its total reserves,\u201d she noted, while China\u2019s 8 tonnes mean \u201cofficial gold reserves now stand at 9% of total reserves or around 2,322t,\u201d while the Czech National Bank\u2019s \u201cmodest but consistent 2t net purchases in April brings its gold reserves to 79t or 6% of its total reserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On the selling side, in addition to Russia, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan sold one tonne of bullion in April, \u201cthough on a y-t-d basis, it remains a net purchaser (24t) and is second only to Poland,\u201d Salim wrote. \u201cUzbekistan\u2019s reserves make up 88% of its total reserves or around 414t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cMarch\u2019s top seller, Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey reported virtually flat gold reserves in April, with weekly data showing that short-term gold\/USD swaps matured in April, leaving only longer-term (1-3 month) gold\/USD swaps outstanding,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"article image\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg preview-image mb-2.5 block w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780512099_241_image.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Looking ahead, Salim said that the World Gold Council\u2019s ninth annual Central Bank Gold Reserves Survey 2026 will be released this month, \u201cand will provide the latest insights into the central banking community\u2019s strategic views on gold as a reserve asset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIn our survey in 2025, central banks held favourable expectations on gold with 95% of respondents indicating that global central bank gold reserves will increase over the next 12 months, this is compared to 81% of respondents indicating the same in our 2024 survey,\u201d she noted. \u201c43% of respondents believe that their own gold reserves will also increase over the same period in 2025, compared to 29% of respondents in our survey in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"article image\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg preview-image mb-2.5 block w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780512099_806_image.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Disclaimer:\u00a0The views expressed in this article are those of the author and may not reflect those of Kitco Metals Inc.
