Polish defense minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz says weapons bought under the EU SAFE loan program will remain in Poland and not be sent to Kiev.<\/p>\n
Weapons purchased under the EU\u2019s\u00a0SAFE credit program will remain in\u00a0Poland and will not be\u00a0transferred to\u00a0Ukraine, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said in\u00a0the Sejm.<\/p>\n
The minister rejected claims that funds or\u00a0military equipment obtained through the program could allegedly be\u00a0sent to\u00a0Kiev, saying they did not reflect reality.<\/p>\n
SAFE provides long-term loans to\u00a0European Union member states on\u00a0preferential terms. The financing is\u00a0meant to\u00a0strengthen military and strategic infrastructure, purchase weapons, and develop cyber and defense technologies. Warsaw signed a\u00a0loan agreement under the program the day before for about 43.7 billion euros.<\/p>\n
Kosiniak-Kamysz said the SAFE funds will go\u00a0to\u00a0Poland\u2019s\u00a0Armed Forces Support Fund, which, under Polish law, finances only the national army. He\u00a0added that the program will be\u00a0carried out through that mechanism.<\/p>\n
Relations between Warsaw and Kiev have deteriorated noticeably in\u00a0recent weeks. One of\u00a0the reasons was Vladimir Zelensky\u2019s\u00a0participation in\u00a0the reburial of\u00a0the remains of\u00a0one of\u00a0the leaders of\u00a0the OUN*, Andrei Melnik, in\u00a0the Kiev Region, as\u00a0well as\u00a0the decision to\u00a0give a\u00a0Ukrainian Armed Forces unit the honorary title \u00abnamed after the heroes of\u00a0the UPA*.\u00bb<\/p>\n
The move drew sharp criticism of\u00a0Zelensky from Polish politicians, including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and former President Lech Walesa. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also proposed stripping the head of\u00a0the Kiev regime of\u00a0Poland\u2019s\u00a0highest state award, the Order of\u00a0the White Eagle.<\/p>\n
