Every year, thousands of Irish holidaymakers flock to this storybook city to see these stunning sights.

Interestingly, Ireland and Prague share many historic links. In fact, one of the city’s most famous streets, Hibernia, is named after the Franciscan monks who, in the 17th century, fled to Prague to escape religious persecution. As well as establishing a monastery, legend holds these Irish monks responsible for introducing the potato to the Czech menu.

Now, Comber women Candice Griezel, who is originally from South Africa, and Jillian Warnock, who are best friends as well as aunt and niece, are about to visit this magical city. Although they won’t get to see many attractions. For them, Prague is just the starting point on a 330-mile cycle ride across the Czech Republic before ending in Krakow, Poland. Far from a relaxing vacation, this four-day marathon is guaranteed to test the women’s physical and mental stamina to the max.

<img decoding="async" data-chromatic="ignore" alt="Candice Griezel and Gillian Warnock who are cycling from Prague to Kraków over 4 days to raise funds for the Herbalife Foundation, supporting Action for Children Charity. This year, Action for Children, which partners with the HFF in the UK, has chosen to do a four-day cycle event from Prague to Krakow. Like many people with the condition, I also had problems with cholesterol, but I didn’t want to go down the route of statins. I did some research and decided to improve my health by focusing on losing weight, exercising and better nutrition. I dragged Candice along for the ride!”

Their determination paid off and, two years later, both women have achieved amazing results.

Every year, the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF), which aims to improve the lives of children through nutrition, holds what’s known as a Tour d’Extravaganza

— Candice Griezel

“We’ve lost weight, feel fitter and have more energy,” Jillian enthuses. “More importantly, my cholesterol levels are down and I’ve reversed my diabetes. There’s a great sense of achievement and we wanted to do something to mark this personal milestone. But we also wanted to give something back to the community. Then I saw the Herbalife Extravaganza/Action for Children event and it seemed a great idea.”

Driven by a variety of factors, including rising food prices, malnutrition among children in the UK is rapidly becoming a health crisis.

“Today, with so much ultra-processed food on offer, we need more education about the importance of good nutrition,” Candice says. “Hopefully our efforts will raise awareness as well as funds.”

Having signed up for the ride of a lifetime, both women had to face the fact that not only were they beginner cyclists, but neither owned a bike.

“We didn’t really think about the details,” Candice laughs. “But buying two racing bikes, plus all the gear and paying for our flights, cost in the region of £2,500 each — a huge outlay. Once we had the bikes, the reality of riding 300-plus miles began to kick in.”

As well as holding down a full-time job, Jillian is mum to 21-year-old twins and a son of 12, and has a two-year-old granddaughter. Candice has a 20-year-old son and a 21-year-old daughter and is looking forward to becoming a granny in September.

How do they find the time to practise their riding skills?

“We get up early!” Candice laughs. “But between work and family commitments, time is limited. We go out as often as we can, but mostly at weekends. The bonus of a 5am start is that the roads are still empty.”

Like many people new to cycling, Jillian found busy roads a challenge.

“For me, going out on the main road for the first time was scary. I was terrified I was going to fall over or get hit by a car. Most drivers were lovely, but there were a few who weren’t patient. Once I got used to it, I became more confident in traffic, but we still had to improve our distances. Initially, we’d ride around locally and think we were the bees’ knees!”

Gradually, the friends began travelling further afield, but their latest adventure, from Newtownards to Newcastle, proved a painful challenge.

<img decoding="async" data-chromatic="ignore" alt="Candice Griezel and Gillian Warnock who are cycling from Prague to Kraków over 4 days to raise funds for the Herbalife Foundation, supporting Action for Children Charity.
