Warsaw East Station modernisation is moving forward after PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe signed a contract with Torpol valued at around EUR 706.4 million.<\/p>\n

The project concerns Warszawa Wschodnia, one of the most important points in the Polish capital\u2019s railway system. The station forms part of Warsaw\u2019s main rail hub and handles very heavy traffic each day, with almost 1,000 trains passing through it. This includes 279 long-distance trains and 673 metropolitan and regional services.<\/p>\n

Given this traffic level, the station is due for a broad transformation. The aim is to strengthen its role in mobility across the Warsaw metropolitan area and in the wider Polish railway network.<\/p>\n

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK), Poland\u2019s railway infrastructure manager, awarded the contract to Torpol<\/a>\u2060 for the modernisation of Warsaw East Station and nearby Warszawa Stadion station, located about 600 metres away. The contract is worth approximately EUR 706.4 million, or PLN 3 billion.<\/p>\n

The tender was announced in August 2025 with a budget of EUR 942 million, equal to PLN 4 billion. Torpol was selected as contractor in March<\/a>\u2060.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to start in December 2026 and continue until the end of 2029. The investment will receive European support through the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment programme<\/a>\u2060, known as FEnIKS.<\/p>\n

Dariusz Klimczak, Poland\u2019s Minister of Infrastructure, said the Warsaw East project follows the modernisation of Warsaw West Station and is linked to further railway investment in the Warsaw agglomeration.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing the modernisation of Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West Station), the time has come to upgrade the second-largest station in the capital \u2013 Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East Station). At the same time, we are implementing investments along the line to Otwock, consistently developing the railway infrastructure of the Warsaw agglomeration. Our aim is to provide a modern and efficient transport system for the capital and for the whole of Poland,\u201d<\/p>\n

Warsaw East Station modernisation to rebuild platforms<\/p>\n

The programme will reshape the passenger areas at Warsaw East Station. All seven platforms are to be rebuilt, fitted with canopies and raised to a standard height, making access to trains easier.<\/p>\n

A new passenger information system is also planned. It will use modern electronic displays and upgraded public address equipment.<\/p>\n

The infrastructure scope is extensive. More than 46 km of railway lines will be modernised, 57 km of new overhead contact line will be built, and 170 turnouts will be installed. The works will also include the reconstruction of seven railway viaducts.<\/p>\n

A new Local Traffic Control Centre will be built as part of the project. It will use modern digital systems for managing train movements.<\/p>\n

One of the main engineering elements will be a new viaduct more than 1.6 km long. It will carry two tracks and link the station with railway line no. 9, improving train movements towards Gda\u0144sk, Olsztyn and Legionowo.<\/p>\n

The structure will also remove conflicts between different traffic flows and increase capacity within Warsaw\u2019s rail hub.<\/p>\n

\nWarszawa Wschodnia to strengthen intermodal links<\/p>\n

The investment is planned not only as a railway infrastructure project, but also as an upgrade of the surrounding transport interchange.<\/p>\n

Warsaw Mayor Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski said the works would cover the wider hub area as well as the station itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe modernisation will not only concern the station, but the entire transport hub and its surrounding area. A long-awaited project is the tunnel that will run beneath the lines between Kijowska and \u017bupnicza streets, connecting the Praga P\u00f3\u0142noc and Praga Po\u0142udnie districts,\u201d<\/p>\n

The three existing underpasses will be rebuilt. A cycle path will also be added in the western tunnel.<\/p>\n

Passengers will reach platforms by stairs, escalators and lifts. Warsaw East Station is to receive 14 lifts and seven pairs of escalators in total.<\/p>\n

Another pedestrian passage will be built beneath platform 6. It will connect the existing underground tunnels and improve movement through the station complex.<\/p>\n

Warszawa Stadion station will also be upgraded and receive one more platform. The project includes a direct link to Stadion Narodowy metro station on line M2, allowing passengers to transfer between rail and metro without leaving the station area.<\/p>\n

\nPKP PLK plans works in two main phases<\/p>\n

The modernisation of Warsaw East Station follows several years of planning and coordination with other rail, road and urban projects in Warsaw.<\/p>\n

The construction programme will be divided into two main stages. The first will cover platforms 1\u20134 and infrastructure used by long-distance services. The second will focus on platforms 5\u20137 and suburban rail infrastructure.<\/p>\n

This phasing is intended to limit disruption to train operations and keep passenger services at the highest possible level during the works.<\/p>\n

Coordination is being carried out with municipal authorities, Metro Warszawskie, Tramwaje Warszawskie, PKP SA, utility companies and other investors working in the area of the capital\u2019s rail hub.<\/p>\n

According to PKP PLK, this model should reduce inconvenience for passengers and allow financial resources to be used more efficiently.<\/p>\n

The project is also connected with preparations for the future reconstruction of Warsaw\u2019s cross-city railway line through the city centre. In recent years, PKP PLK has prepared for this broader programme by modernising Warszawa Zachodnia, building the new Warszawa G\u0142\u00f3wna station, expanding infrastructure at Warszawa Gda\u0144ska and upgrading key systems at Warszawa Centralna.<\/p>\n

Warsaw railway hub investment continues<\/p>\n

The Warsaw East Station modernisation forms part of a wider programme for developing railway infrastructure in Poland. Over the past six months, PKP PLK has signed contracts worth around EUR 1.2 billion, or PLN 5 billion, for major projects.<\/p>\n

These include key sections of the Pod\u0142\u0119\u017ce\u2013Piekie\u0142ko line and line 201 between Bydgoszcz and the Tr\u00f3jmiasto area, which consists of Gda\u0144sk, Gdynia and Sopot.<\/p>\n
