article-text\">WARSAW \u2013 A <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-ukraine-insurgent-army-zelenskyy-nawrocki-order-48c3d4a494b744ff039923c3f1bed976\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decision by Polish President Karol Nawrocki<\/a> to strip <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-president-conservative-karol-nawrocki-trump-bb028ee68b5677d9195707fb4a6947c1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> of Poland\u2019s highest state honor was beneficial to Moscow, which has an interest in seeing Kyiv in conflict with its allies, Ukrainian officials said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Nawrocki announced on Friday that he will strip Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle over the Ukrainian leader\u2019s decision to name a military unit after a Ukrainian paramilitary organization accused of massacring Poles during World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Former Polish President Andrzej Duda bestowed the award on Zelenskyy in 2023 for services to security, resilience and the defense of human rights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Zelenskyy issued a decree on May 26 naming a military unit of Ukraine\u2019s Special Operations Forces after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, or UPA, which operated during the 1940s and 1950s and has been accused in Poland of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-poland-volhynia-massacre-reconciliation-1ef6a70fd5d920e74885317352abd4ce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mass killings<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cFor the majority of Polish society, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army remains above all a formation responsible for cruel crimes against the citizens of the Polish Republic during World War II,\u201d Nawrocki said in a 13-minute address on social media. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The decision to revoke the honor did not mean Poland\u2019s support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia would decrease, Nawrocki said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ukrainian Presidential Office chief Kyrylo Budanov wrote on Telegram that Nawrocki&#8217;s decision was \u201can unfriendly act toward our people\u201d and \u201ca gift to the Moscow aggressor, which will certainly use it against both of our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the decision \u201ca strategic mistake by the President of Poland, one that benefits only Moscow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar said the decision was \u201cespecially painful\u201d as Ukrainians battle missile and drone attacks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">All three Ukrainian officials said they would return orders issued to them by the Polish state. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Poland is scheduled to host a major event on Ukraine\u2019s postwar reconstruction next week, which Zelenskyy is expected to attend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a political rival of Nawrocki, urged the two leaders to \u201ccalm emotions, not stoke tensions.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe front line runs elsewhere,\u201d Tusk wrote on social media Friday night, adding that the conflict between Poland and Ukraine \u201cdelights Putin and shocks our allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Zelenskyy\u2019s May decree said the designation was meant to restore the historical traditions of the national military and recognize the unit\u2019s performance in defending Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity and independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The UPA fought for Ukrainian independence against both Nazi German and Soviet forces. But it has been accused of killing tens of thousands of Poles, most in the Nazi-occupied regions of Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. In 2016, the Polish Parliament recognized the crimes committed by UPA as genocide. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ukrainians say armed formations on both sides, including the UPA and Polish underground forces, were involved in attacks and reprisals that led to large-scale civilian casualties among Poles and Ukrainians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Poland and Ukraine had recently made progress on the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-ukraine-president-exhumations-nationalism-7b442b3e82cee9c0f92a3601a0e85761\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhumation of Polish victims<\/a>.
