As the Russia-Ukraine war continues to escalate, Western intelligence sources warned that Russia is preparing a \u201cpossible provocation\u201d against two countries on Nato\u2019s eastern flank. The warnings were issued to Poland and the Baltic states, and it is believed that the provocation would test the cohesion of the Western military alliance.<\/p>\n
According to The Guardian, sources also feared that there could be danger on the horizon because the Kremlin is coming under pressure from Ukraine\u2019s campaign of long-range attacks on targets near Moscow and St Petersburg. \u201cWe see indications that Russia is preparing military provocations against the Baltic countries or Poland.\u201d However, it would be well short of a full-scale attack,” Latvian intelligence said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n

A senior political source from a second Nato member state made a similar statement last week. They said \u201cwe are picking up intelligence\u201d that Vladimir Putin was \u201cplanning something against the Baltic states\u201d. They argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be willing to test US support for some of Nato\u2019s smallest member countries \u2013 Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania \u2013 in a desperate effort \u201cto throw the dice\u201d as Russia struggles with its invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Polish PM shares similar concerns<\/p>\n
On Thursday night, Poland\u2019s Prime Minister went on record sharing his own concern. \u201cWe also share, without exception, the \u200copinion that the situation is very \u200bunstable and various types of \u2060escalation can be expected \u200bin the \u200bcoming \u200bweeks and \u200bmonths,\u201d Donald Tusk said at a press conference after the Eastern Flank summit in Gdansk. \u201cWe will want to prepare as a group of countries directly exposed to this risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Latvian intelligence said Russia was not capable of opening a second front, but was considering \u201chybrid attacks, such as missiles, drones or other actions designed to send a signal: stop supporting Ukraine, or you will have your own problems\u201d.<\/p>\n
The warnings are coming at a time when Russia\u2019s advance in Ukraine has stalled.
