Missile crosses into Poland<\/p>\n

ABC News reported that Zelenskyy said at least eight people were killed across the country with dozens more injured, while the Ukrainian air force said Russia launched 284 drones and 70 missiles and that it intercepted or suppressed 265 drones and 55 missiles.<\/p>\n

During the same wave, Poland\u2019s authorities said an \u201cunidentified object\u201d violated national airspace, prompting the deployment of a fighter jet and a helicopter, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha alleged on X that the object was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile.<\/p>\n

The crash site was identified near the eastern village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, where NATO\u2019s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe spokesperson Colonel Martin O\u2019Donnell said NATO and Poland activated air and ground defenses in response to a Russian missile that entered Polish airspace and later crashed into Polish territory.<\/p>\n

At the same time, ABC News said a Russian ballistic missile hit a residential building near Zelenskyy\u2019s home town of Kryviyh Rih, killing several members of a family including at least three children, and it said Lviv\u2019s mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported at least 20 people injured. <\/p>\n

NATO, Poland, Ukraine trade claims<\/p>\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was in contact with NATO command and other European leaders regarding the violation of Polish airspace, and he insisted there was \u201cno reason to think Poland was the intended target.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Spokesman-Review quoted Tusk at the crash site saying there was \u201cvery likely\u201d an explosion given the impact crater\u2019s size, while it also said he cautioned there is \u201cno reason to believe that Poland was the target.\u201d<\/p>\n

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called the incident \u201cyet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine,\u201d and NATO said it was in close contact with Polish authorities about the violation of Poland\u2019s airspace.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X that the missile was \u201ca Russian Kh-101 cruise missile\u201d that violated NATO airspace, and he framed it as \u201cyet another clear demonstration that strengthening Ukraine\u2019s air defense now is urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Washington Post reported that NATO said the missile landed in a rural area and did not cause any injuries, while it described the episode as raising \u201cfresh concerns\u201d about escalation into direct confrontation with the Western military alliance. <\/p>\n

What comes next for security<\/p>\n

France 24 reported that NATO, Ukraine, and European leaders strongly condemned Russia for breaching Poland\u2019s airspace, while it said a NATO spokesman, Martin O\u2019Donnell, described the event as \u201cone of many missiles fired by Russia at Ukraine overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABC News said Zelenskyy blamed \u201cinsufficient or delayed\u201d air defense supplies for deaths across Ukraine and argued that \u201cThis Russian terror once again proves: protecting against the Russian missile threat is the most important task for preserving the lives of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Poland, the object\u2019s suspected origin was repeatedly linked to the Russian Kh-101, with TVP World quoting NATO\u2019s confirmation that the crash involved \u201ca Russian missile of currently unknown type that entered Polish airspace and later crashed into Polish territory.\u201d<\/p>\n
