{"id":22373,"date":"2026-08-24T10:53:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T10:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/22373\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T10:53:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T10:53:01","slug":"edward-krasinskis-frayed-former-flat-in-central-warsaw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/22373\/","title":{"rendered":"Edward Krasin\u0301ski\u2019s frayed former flat in central Warsaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to the apartment, the presence of the line encourages the eye to move around the space, drinking it all in. \u2018As the blue Scotch tape line is different and surprising, we notice it,\u2019 Aleksandra suggests. \u2018We notice the things on which it runs, so it describes the world around us.\u2019 There it is streaking across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofinteriors.com\/story\/henry-coleman-turner-installation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">windows<\/a> of the apartment, with their Daniel Buren stripes. There it is again, dancing across the tie of his friend, fellow artist and former housemate Henryk Staz\u0307ewski, in a photograph lovingly stuck up on one of the walls. It\u2019s a vibrant, dynamic shock of blue drawing the viewer in to an otherwise static environment. It reminds us that life happened here.<\/p>\n<p>Krasi\u0144ski\u2019s was not the only life lived out in this space, however. Poland\u2019s communist government \u2018wanted to show how modern they were, so they used contemporary art, abstract art, to build this kind of propaganda\u2019, Aleksandra explains. State architects were instructed to include studios in otherwise nondescript blocks, which the Artists\u2019 Association assigned to practising artists. Staz\u0307ewski, an established figure in the Polish art scene, was given the apartment in 1962 and instigated a well-attended salon there. It was a place of freedom and exchange, a welcome antidote to a grey period of history. A few years later, Krasin\u0301ski, an active participant in these gatherings, moved in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Edward Krasin\u0301skis studio\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ResponsiveImageContainer-dkeESL cQPiWi responsive-image__image\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/_DSC5495-Edytuj.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just in front of the cupboards stands the upended frame of the bed in which painter Henryk Staz\u0307ewski slept when he shared the apartment. His flatmate repurposed it as a frame for a poster advertising the aforementioned solo exhibition at the Zache\u0328ta<\/p>\n<p>When Staz\u0307ewski died in 1988, all his works and personal belongings were given to the national museum and the studio was left empty. Krasin\u0301ski arranged his own work around the studio but made sure to keep the physical remains of his friend\u2019s presence, right down to nails in the walls, metal strings on which Staz\u0307ewski\u2019s paintings had hung, and the shadows that said paintings left on the walls.
