At the same time, Poland argues that the current G20 framework relies too heavily on Western European capitals to speak for the entire European Union, leaving the group overlooking the specific economic and security realities of the bloc’s eastern flank.

Poland’s case for the G20

“A unique voice for Poland in Central and Eastern Europe is needed in the G20,” the White House said in a statement to the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, confirming its support for Warsaw’s push for full membership.

Currently, no country from Central and Eastern Europe holds a seat in the G20. Poland argues that this exclusion leaves a geographic and economic blind spot in global decision-making.

The country is already the sixth-largest economy in the European Union and is projected to overtake Switzerland as the world’s 20th-largest economy by 2028. From a geopolitical perspective, its frontline role in European security, especially since the start of the war in Ukraine, lends Poland strategic weight beyond its economic significance.

Why Washington backs Warsaw

Washington’s support for Warsaw’s bid also comes as economic and security ties between the two countries deepen. In April 2026, officials signed a bilateral critical minerals framework, the first for an EU state, targeting rare earth elements to secure tech and defense supply chains. The U.S. also supports Poland’s expansion as a regional liquefied natural gas hub to replace Russian pipelines and route American gas to Ukraine and Slovakia, alongside civil nuclear projects with Westinghouse and Bechtel.

Military ties have reinforced this alignment. Poland allocates 4.8% of GDP to defense, leading NATO in relative spending while also becoming part of Poland’s broader pitch to investors, reinforcing the country’s image of strategic resilience.

“Capital no longer automatically flows to where scale is greatest. It goes where there is stability, predictability and real resilience,” said Krzysztof Dresler, vice president of PKO Bank Polski.

Beyond the cheap-labor model

Poland’s push for a G20 seat comes as the economic model that drove much of its growth over the past three decades begins to change. The country built its economic success on low-cost labor and subcontracting for Western European companies, but investment is increasingly moving toward R&D, high-end business services and more specialized manufacturing.

Securing a long-term presence in the G20 will require Poland to demonstrate its “systemic importance,” according to a recent analysis. Experts warn that Warsaw risks being seen as another European voice alongside Brussels, Berlin and Paris. Its strongest case may lie in areas where its own experience gives it a distinct perspective, including global supply chains, financial regulation and the energy transition.

The limits of G20 expansion

However, Poland’s invitation comes against a complicated diplomatic backdrop. Washington broke G20 precedent by excluding South Africa, a permanent member, from this year’s summit while making room for Warsaw.

The Miami invitation shows that in a format without a formal treaty, “‘membership’ is a convention rather than a right, dependent on the political will of the host,” Smoleńska notes.

Yet, securing a permanent seat will be an uphill battle for Poland. The G20 operates on minilateralism, a small membership designed to make consensus easier to reach, and currently lacks agreement on expansion.

Europe’s overrepresentation is the primary barrier. Germany, France and Italy hold individual seats, the EU participates as a bloc, and nations like Spain and the Netherlands attend regularly. Non-European members, particularly Global South heavyweights like Brazil and South Africa, alongside Russia, resist adding another European vote.

Instead of immediate permanent status, Warsaw’s pragmatic path might lie in building “middle power” alliances with nations like Canada, Australia and South Korea. Upcoming host presidencies, the UK in 2027 and South Korea in 2028, offer concrete diplomatic windows to turn guest access into a permanent presence.

President Donald Trump holds a bilateral meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office at the…

[2
2004,14142,9,14144,14143,45
post-23375","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-poland","tag-eastern-europe","tag-g20","tag-poland","tag-poland-trump","tag-poland-us","tag-warsaw
["GET
