{"id":23499,"date":"2026-09-01T15:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T15:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/23499\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T15:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T15:30:08","slug":"polish-president-urges-germany-to-pay-wwii-reparations-to-help-fund-polands-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/23499\/","title":{"rendered":"Polish president urges Germany to pay WWII reparations to help fund Poland&#8217;s military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ov7qhy---c16x9x50px50p--6429f47606a8dff89872f114db9004e0.jpg\" alt=\"Polish president urges Germany to pay WWII reparations to help fund Poland's military\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"486\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Polish President Karol Nawrocki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polsatnews.pl\/wiadomosc\/2026-09-01\/nawrocki-na-westerplatte-zwrocil-sie-do-tuska-uderza-tez-w-niemcy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\">renewed <\/a>his country&#8217;s demand for World War II reparations from Germany, arguing that the money could be used to strengthen Poland&#8217;s military and European security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">Nawrocki made the remarks at Westerplatte in Gda\u0144sk during commemorations marking the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II on September 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">He called on the German chancellor to resolve the long-running dispute over reparations, framing compensation not only as a matter of historical justice but also as an investment in Europe&#8217;s current security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">\u201cThe world has put us in a situation where a real, firm declaration of alliance toward Poland requires our allies and neighbors in Berlin to pay us compensation, which Poland will allocate to its armed forces,\u201d Nawrocki said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">He argued that such funding could reduce Poland&#8217;s need to rely on Western loans while helping strengthen what he described as the country&#8217;s role as NATO&#8217;s \u201cfortress in the east.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">Nawrocki also criticized Germany over what he described as insufficient recognition of Polish suffering during World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">\u201cThis is not a real alliance and real friendship if we cannot erect a monument to Polish victims of World War II in Berlin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">The Polish president also argued that German hostility toward Poland predated Adolf Hitler, citing anti-Polish attitudes among German writers in the 19th century and during the Weimar Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">Poland&#8217;s former Law and Justice-led government previously demanded about \u20ac1.3 trillion in reparations from Germany for losses suffered during World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">Berlin has repeatedly rejected the demand, maintaining that the issue of reparations has been legally settled and that there is no basis for further claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-start\">Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, beginning World War II in Europe.
