interview<\/a> with the Financial Times, Tusk said the \u201cbiggest, most important question is if the United States is ready to be as loyal as it is described in our [NATO] treaties,\u201d adding that Russia could potentially attack a member of the alliance within \u201cmonths.\u201d<\/p>\nHis remarks reflect rising concern in Europe following signals from US President Donald Trump about reducing Washington\u2019s role in European defence and ambiguity over honouring NATO\u2019s Article 5 mutual defence clause.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the whole eastern flank, my neighbours\u2026 the question is if NATO is still an organisation ready, politically and also logistically, to react,\u201d Tusk said.<\/p>\n
He pointed to an incident last year in which about 20 Russian drones violated Polish airspace, saying some NATO allies were reluctant to treat it as a serious provocation. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy for me to convince our partners\u2026 it was a well-planned and prepared provocation,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cfor some of our colleagues, it was much easier to pretend that nothing happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
While stressing he does not question Article 5 itself, Tusk said he wants assurances that \u201cguarantees on paper will change into something very practical,\u201d noting that \u201csometimes\u2026 I have some problems\u201d trusting how commitments would work in reality.<\/p>\n
Tusk\u2019s comments come as the European Union discusses strengthening its own mutual defence clause, Article 42.7, amid efforts to play a larger role in security following Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for bringing the clause \u201cto life,\u201d though some member states remain cautious about undermining NATO.<\/p>\n
Tusk emphasised that Europe must develop \u201ctrue tools and real power\u201d for defence cooperation, including military mobility and joint capabilities. \u201cMy mission is to reintegrate Europe\u2026 a common effort to protect our eastern borders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
