{"id":4223,"date":"2026-04-29T13:40:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/4223\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T13:40:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:40:16","slug":"poland-cuts-steel-for-the-third-and-final-miecznik-frigate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/4223\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland cuts steel for the third and final Miecznik frigate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">With a symbolic cutting of the first steel plates for the frigate Huragan, the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium officially commenced construction of the third and final multi-purpose Project 106 vessel, being built as part of the programme codenamed \u201cMiecznik\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>PGZ press release<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony took place on 28 April 2026 at the PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia \u2013 the technical leader of the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was attended by, among others, Pawe\u0142 Bejda \u2013 Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defence, Konrad Go\u0142ota \u2013 Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of State Assets, Gen. Andrzej Kowalski \u2013 Deputy Head of the National Security Bureau, Rear Adm. Jaros\u0142aw Ziemia\u0144ski \u2013 Inspector of the Navy, Vice-Admiral Krzysztof Jaworski \u2013 Commander of the Maritime Operations Centre, as well as other representatives of the Polish Navy Command, the Armaments Agency and programme partners from Poland and abroad.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"771\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"Steel cut for the third and final Miecznik frigate for Polish Navy\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/PXL_20260428_093821376-1024x771.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Steel cutting ceremony for the 3rd Miecznik frigate for the Polish Navy (PGZ picture)<\/p>\n<p>\u201d\u00a0With the start of construction on the Huragan, we are entering the next phase of the\u201cMiecznik\u201d programme. This is a special moment \u2013 the Wicher is heading towards its launch, scheduled for August this year, the Burza is in the hull section construction phase, and today we are starting work on the third vessel. PGZ Stocznia Wojenna is carrying out this programme on schedule, systematically developing its capabilities and utilising modern infrastructure, expanded for the needs of this programme. \u201cThe experience we have gained is an asset that will serve us well in future naval projects for the Polish Navy,\u201d\u00a0said Marcin Ryngwelski, CEO of PGZ Stocznia Wojenna. \u201cThis is the third steel-cutting ceremony in the\u201cMiecznik\u201d programme, but not the last at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna,\u201d added the CEO.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2023\/07\/new-details-on-polands-miecznik-class-frigates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">multi-role frigates being built by the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium are based on the British Arrowhead 140 design<\/a>. The vessels will meet the Polish Navy\u2019s requirements for the protection of maritime areas and bases, the engagement of surface, submarine and coastal targets, as well as the conduct of maritime air defence within the framework of national and allied operations.<\/p>\n<p>Work on the construction of the ships is being carried out in the Miecznik PGZ Stocznia Wojenna\u2019s Hull Hall \u2013 the largest ship assembly hall in Poland \u2013 and in the shipyard\u2019s production halls. The bow sections are also being built at the partner shipyard CRIST S.A. in Gdynia.<\/p>\n<p>Basic vessel specifications:<\/p>\n<p>overall length \u2013 approx. 138 m;<\/p>\n<p>maximum beam \u2013 approx. 20 m;<\/p>\n<p>maximum displacement (including auxiliary equipment and hull plating) \u2013 approx. 7,000 tonnes;<\/p>\n<p>range \u2013 approx. 8,000 nautical miles;<\/p>\n<p>maximum speed \u2013 28 knots;<\/p>\n<p>propulsion \u2013 4 CODAD diesel piston engines, 2 controllable-pitch propellers;<\/p>\n<p>crew \u2013 120 personnel + approx. 60 additional personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the first frigate \u2013\u00a0Wicher\u00a0\u2013 is at an advanced stage of hull assembly. The launch is scheduled for August 2026, and commissioning for 2029. The second frigate,\u00a0Burza, has already completed the steel cutting (May 2025) and keel-laying (December 2025) stages and is currently undergoing the construction of further hull sections.
