{"id":5576,"date":"2026-05-08T14:02:05","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/5576\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T14:02:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:02:05","slug":"poland-secures-e43-7-billion-eu-defence-package-under-safe-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/poland\/5576\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland secures \u20ac43.7 billion EU defence package under SAFE programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>08 May 2026 17:47<\/p>\n<p>Poland has become the first country to receive funding under the European Union\u2019s SAFE defence initiative after signing an agreement worth nearly \u20ac43.7 billion aimed at expanding and modernising its armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement was signed in Warsaw on May 8 by Deputy Prime Minister and Defenve Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domanski, European commissioners Andrius Kubilius and Piotr Serafin, as well as representatives of BGK Bank, <a href=\"https:\/\/caliber.az\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Caliber.Az <\/a>reports per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmf24.pl\/fakty\/polska\/news-umowa-ws-programu-safe-podpisana-do-polski-ma-trafic-prawie-,nId,8080942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Polish media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the agreement as a \u201cturning point in the history of Poland and the EU,\u201d saying the funding would strengthen the country\u2019s security by around 180 billion zlotys.<\/p>\n<p>Tusk stressed that Poland remains committed to NATO and collective defence obligations while continuing to expand its military capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Defence Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz said additional defence contracts are expected to be signed in May and that the allocated funds have already been linked to specific military projects.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Domanski said the programme would also support the domestic defence sector by creating jobs and accelerating industrial modernisation.<\/p>\n<p>According to General Weslaw Kukula, the Polish military plans to use the funding rapidly to strengthen operational readiness and defence capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The SAFE programme \u2014 Support for Ammunition and Firearms in Europe \u2014 is designed to accelerate arms procurement and reinforce Europe\u2019s defence sector.
