The U.S. Army<\/a> has abruptly canceled the planned deployment of roughly 4,000 soldiers to Poland<\/a>, a defense official confirmed to the Washington Examiner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The deployment involved the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, also known as the \u201cBlack Jack\u201d brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas<\/a>. The move reduces American troop levels in Europe<\/a> to near pre-2022 levels.<\/p>\n

The unit had been preparing for a nine-month rotation to Poland as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, the NATO<\/a> mission launched after Russia<\/a>\u2018s 2014 annexation of Crimea and expanded following Moscow\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The official confirmed the deployment had been halted but offered no explanation for the sudden decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Soldiers and families reportedly began learning of the change early Tuesday as word spread informally among troops preparing to leave. Portions of the brigade\u2019s advance team were already in Poland, and military equipment had begun transit overseas, according to<\/a> Defense News.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The decision comes weeks after the Pentagon announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany following what defense<\/a> officials described as a review of force posture and operational needs in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

War Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a> previously said the administration was evaluating \u201ctheater requirements and conditions on the ground\u201d as part of a broader reassessment of overseas deployments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The troop changes have raised questions among lawmakers and NATO allies about the future of America\u2019s military presence on the alliance\u2019s eastern flank as Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine<\/a> continues. Poland has become one of Washington\u2019s closest security partners in Europe and hosts more than 10,000 U.S. troops on rotational deployments, along with major logistics hubs supporting NATO operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing this week, ranking member Jack Reed (D-RI) said the Army faces at least a $2 million budget shortfall tied to expanded operations, including National Guard deployments in Washington and missions at the U.S.-Mexico border.
