According to\u00a0Politico, the US\u00a0decision to\u00a0suspend the deployment of\u00a0an\u00a0armored brigade came as\u00a0a\u00a0complete surprise to\u00a0Poland\u2019s\u00a0military command.<\/p>\n
The outlet reported that the Pentagon had sent a\u00a0notice to\u00a0the Chief of\u00a0the General Staff of\u00a0the Polish Armed Forces, General Wieslaw Kukula, early last week. However, the message ended up\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0secure email account and remained unread for some time. As\u00a0a\u00a0result, Polish officials learned about the change not through direct channels, but from reports in\u00a0the American press.<\/p>\n
Pentagon spokesman Joel Valdez said the troop withdrawal decision was made through a\u00a0broad, multi-level review that took into account the views of\u00a0key leaders and the full chain of\u00a0command.<\/p>\n
Politico reported that the decision affected more than 4,000 soldiers of\u00a0the US\u00a02nd Armored Brigade, whose rotation was canceled. The notice sent through classified communication channels was brief and offered no\u00a0explanation. Because of\u00a0strict rules for handling classified information, the message remained unopened for an\u00a0extended period.<\/p>\n
