WARSAW, May 20 (Reuters) – Poland’s defence minister said no decisions have been made \u200cto reduce the number of American troops \u200cin the country and recent U.S. moves may only temporarily \u200bdelay their deployment, after meeting U.S. Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Christopher Mahoney.<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance told reporters on Tuesday a U.S. \u200ctroop deployment to Poland \u2060had been delayed, but that it was not accurate to say the troops \u2060were being withdrawn from Europe.<\/p>\n

Poland was earlier alarmed by reports the Pentagon had canceled plans to deploy \u200b4,000 \u200bU.S troops in the \u200bcountry. Officials tried to \u200creassure Poles that this was not the case.<\/p>\n

“Decisions that are made in the U.S. and their consequences may temporarily delay the deployment of U.S. forces to Poland, which is exactly what we said–that \u200cthere was no decision to \u200breduce them, only a temporary \u200bsuspension,” Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz \u200btold reporters after meeting Mahoney.<\/p>\n

Earlier this \u200cmonth, the Pentagon said it \u200bwould withdraw 5,000 \u200btroops from NATO ally Germany, in part due to a widening rift between U.S. President \u200bDonald Trump \u200cand Europe linked to the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n
