He should then be sworn in by President Andrzej Duda, a step expected Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The election of Tusk comes after the former government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki\u2019s government lost a confidence vote in parliament earlier on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight:400\">The reign of the outgoing\u00a0right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party was marked by numerous<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/12\/22\/eu-takes-legal-action-against-poland-over-rule-of-law-dispute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> disputes with the EU<\/a> over issues including judicial independence, the rule of law and minority rights, and have led to billions in funds from the bloc being frozen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocracy has won \u2026 This is the end of the PiS government,\u201d Tusk told party members at a celebration on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the EU and NATO, Poland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/10\/15\/poland-votes-in-key-election-amid-rising-nationalism-ukraine-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">position<\/a> \u2013 shifting away from supporting neighbouring Ukraine and its response to people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/9\/27\/anti-migrant-rhetoric-dominates-politics-in-poland-ahead-of-october-vote\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fleeing the conflict<\/a> \u2013\u00a0was being closely watched by allies.<\/p>\n<p>A former European Council president, Tusk intends to move Poland closer to European allies and revive support for Ukraine.
