US President Donald Trump surprised NATO allies by pledging to send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned alliance ministers that Washington\u2019s frustration with some of them would still need to be discussed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President\u2019s views of, frankly, disappointment at some of our NATO allies and their response to our operations in the Middle East are well documented,\u201d Rubio said on Friday at a gathering of NATO foreign ministers in the Swedish town of Helsingborg.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat will have to be addressed. That won\u2019t be solved or addressed today. That\u2019s something for the leaders level to discuss,\u201d Rubio told reporters, adding that any alliance \u201chas to be good for everyone who\u2019s involved\u201d.<\/p>\n

It was his first meeting with NATO allies since the war on Iran sparked deep divisions inside the bloc, with Trump saying he was considering withdrawing from the alliance and questioning whether Washington was bound to honour its mutual defence pact.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoland is a model ally\u201d
NATO allies reacted with relief to Trump\u2019s turnabout that came after weeks in which the president fiercely criticised NATO members for not doing more to help the US-Israeli military campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood alliances are those based on cooperation, mutual respect, and a commitment to our shared security,\u201d Polish President Karol Nawrocki wrote on X, after Trump had cited his relationship with Nawrocki as the reason behind his decision.<\/p>\n

The move confirms that Polish-American ties are \u201cvery strong, and Poland is a model ally,\u201d Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz\u00a0wrote on X.<\/p>\n

Poland\u2019s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said US troop numbers in his country would now remain at \u201cmore or less the previous level\u201d, which Kosiniak-Kamysz specified to be around 10,000 personnel.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Polish authorities had been alarmed by reports that the Pentagon had cancelled plans for the rotational deployment of some 4,000 US troops there. It was not immediately clear where the additional 5,000 fresh troops would come from.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s confusing,\u201d Sweden\u2019s Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard noted\u00a0when asked about the back and forth in the deployment saga.<\/p>\n

Rubio says US sticking with global commitments
Rubio said the pledge of extra troops demonstrated that \u201cthe United States continues to have global commitments that it needs to meet in terms of our force deployment\u201d but cautioned deployments would continue to be re-examined.<\/p>\n

He did not spell out in public any US plans to cut Washington\u2019s commitments to NATO\u2019s defence plans, a topic meant to be discussed the same day at NATO\u2019s Brussels headquarters, according to sources.<\/p>\n

European concerns about Trump\u2019s attitude toward NATO were also exacerbated this\u00a0year by Trump\u2019s push to acquire Greenland, a territory of fellow NATO member Denmark, and the cancellation of the planned deployment of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Germany.<\/p>\n

At the meeting in Helsingborg, NATO allies again stressed their commitment to step up and take their fair share of the burden, both in securing the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz when conditions permit and in Europe\u2019s defence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognise that there is a desire to draw down the troop numbers\u2026What is important is that it happens in a structured manner,\u201d Norway\u2019s Espen Barth Eide said. He was echoed by his Dutch counterpart Tom Berendsen.<\/p>\n
