The monumental scale of most of Joana Vasconcelos’ works are just a part of her story. First, there was a chandelier made of tampons at Lux, Lisbon’s trendy nightclub, a place where she even worked as a bouncer for a while. Then, there was the shoe made of pans or the helicopter lined in gold, crystals and feathers. Her Versailles’ exhibition was seen by 1.6 million visitors: the most viewed exhibition in France in over 50 years.

But she doesn’t just break records, she breaks boundaries and fights for the wellbeing of the many workers, handymen and artisans that help her achieve the scale of her amazing works. In this conversation with Tony Gonçalves, Joana tells us how her dissatisfaction with jewellery led her to pursue other artistic endeavours: she kept thinking bigger than what the small pieces allowed her.

Joana isn’t shy to declare her work as profoundly Portuguese, after all, most of the artworks that line her sculptures are made by local artisans, and when asked what she thinks is the one value or characteristic that defines Portuguese people she doesn’t hesitate:‌ beauty.
