Foi o ponto de inflex\u00e3o que interrompeu uma curva ascendente de 10 anos de gl\u00f3rias, per\u00edodo em que a banda cravou seu nome no heavy metal.<\/p>\n<p>Porque mesmo nos momentos de tens\u00e3o que j\u00e1 havia enfrentado \u2014 como nas sa\u00eddas de <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/tag\/paul-dianno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Paul Di\u2019Anno<\/a><\/strong> e <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/tag\/clive-burr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Clive Burr<\/a><\/strong> ou no estranhamento inicial entre <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/tag\/steve-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Steve Harris<\/a><\/strong> e <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/tag\/bruce-dickinson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bruce Dickinson<\/a><\/strong> que quase tirou o vocalista de cena ainda em 1982 \u2014, a Donzela de Ferro parecia se fortalecer na adversidade. N\u00e3o foi o que aconteceu, por\u00e9m, quando <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/tag\/adrian-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Adrian Smith<\/a><\/strong> pulou fora no fim da d\u00e9cada de 1980.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Advertisement &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>A sa\u00edda do guitarrista, substitu\u00eddo por <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/tag\/janick-gers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Janick Gers<\/a><\/strong>, e uma s\u00e9rie de escolhas equivocadas \u2014 incluindo local de grava\u00e7\u00e3o, tipo de produ\u00e7\u00e3o e a tentativa de \u201cvoltar \u00e0s ra\u00edzes\u201d \u2014 desidrataram o Maiden, que adentrou os anos 1990 com seu trabalho mais fraco at\u00e9 ent\u00e3o e \u00e0 beira da implos\u00e3o que viria em 1993, com a sa\u00edda de Bruce.<\/p>\n<p>  Adrian Smith est\u00e1 fora <\/p>\n<p>O guitarrista mais querido dentre os f\u00e3s de Iron Maiden, Adrian Smith deixou a banda no in\u00edcio de 1990 alegando diverg\u00eancia com os rumos tomados por Steve Harris para o \u00e1lbum seguinte. Mais especificamente, com o som \u201cdespojado\u201d que o baixista queria revisitar e que caracterizou \u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ap\u00f3s discos elaborados e complexos, como <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2022\/11\/iron-maiden-somewhere-in-time-steve-harris-opiniao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Somewhere in Time<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> (1986) e <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2023\/04\/iron-maiden-seventh-son-of-a-seventh-son\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Seventh Son of a Seventh Son<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> (1988), a c\u00fapula do Maiden entendeu que era hora de simplificar um pouco as coisas. Algo que n\u00e3o agradou Smith, cujo ponto de vista ele <a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2022\/10\/adrian-smith-saida-iron-maiden-no-prayer-for-the-dying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sintetizou<\/a> \u00e0 r\u00e1dio Planet Rock em 2020:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEst\u00e1vamos com uma sonoridade mais produzida, talvez mais refinada. O que Steve queria fazer depois disso, talvez Bruce tamb\u00e9m, era um som mais \u2018direto e reto\u2019. Ele estava com o est\u00fadio m\u00f3vel dos <strong>Rolling Stones<\/strong>, n\u00e3o t\u00ednhamos tantas m\u00fasicas prontas e, para ser sincero, eu estava sofrendo com isso.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Na biografia \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/46S7dtx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Iron Maiden: Run to the Hills<\/a>\u201d (1998), do jornalista brit\u00e2nico <strong>Mick Wall<\/strong>, o guitarrista d\u00e1 ainda mais detalhes dos motivos de seu descontentamento:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vibe era \u2018vamos voltar a fazer m\u00fasicas com sonoridade bem crua, como no \u00e1lbum <strong>Killers<\/strong>\u2018, e eu n\u00e3o queria fazer aquilo. Achava que est\u00e1vamos na dire\u00e7\u00e3o certa com os dois \u00faltimos discos, e, para mim, a banda daria um passo atr\u00e1s ao abandonar tudo aquilo. Sentia que a gente devia continuar seguindo em frente e, portanto, aquela abordagem n\u00e3o me parecia correta. Minha postura, por\u00e9m, n\u00e3o foi: \u2018Beleza! Eu t\u00f4 saindo!\u2019. Eu s\u00f3 n\u00e3o estava 100% seguro das coisas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No fim das contas, n\u00e3o houve um pedido de demiss\u00e3o formal, tampouco Adrian Smith foi sumariamente demitido. Segundo escreveu Bruce Dickinson em sua autobiografia \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4pMSAjB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Para que serve este bot\u00e3o?<\/a>\u201d (2017), o guitarrista simplesmente \u201csaiu\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNingu\u00e9m esperava por aquilo, acho que nem o pr\u00f3prio Adrian, da mesma forma que ningu\u00e9m escolhe pisar em areia movedi\u00e7a ou jogar amarelinha em campo minado. \u00c9 famoso o dito de que se esperava de um soldado romano que ca\u00edsse sobre a pr\u00f3pria espada para evitar a desonra. Por\u00e9m, acho que Adrian n\u00e3o sabia que havia uma espada \u00e0 sua espera na fat\u00eddica tarde em que exp\u00f4s suas preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es quanto ao \u00e1lbum a ser gravado. Claramente n\u00e3o estava satisfeito, mas duvido que quisesse sair; s\u00f3 queria que as coisas melhorassem. O problema foi que a conversa ganhou tom de acusa\u00e7\u00e3o e, no fim, foi nossa pr\u00f3pria arrog\u00e2ncia, alimentada por nosso sucesso aparentemente intoc\u00e1vel, que selou seu destino. Ele n\u00e3o foi demitido; simplesmente caminhou para o po\u00e7o do elevador vazio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Janick Gers: o novato <\/p>\n<p>O escolhido para preencher a vaga foi Janick Gers. O novato tinha passagens por <strong>White Spirit<\/strong>, <strong>Gogmagog<\/strong>, <strong>Gillan<\/strong> (do vocalista <strong>Ian Gillan<\/strong>, \u00e0 \u00e9poca ex-<strong>Deep Purple<\/strong>) e pela banda solo de Bruce Dickinson, que j\u00e1 havia se aventurado com um trabalho fora do Iron Maiden naquele ano \u2014 <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2024\/01\/bruce-dickinson-tattooed-millionaire-album-opiniao-atual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tattooed Millionaire<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> (1990).<\/p>\n<p>A escolha at\u00e9 poderia fazer sentido no \u00e2mbito de simplificar as composi\u00e7\u00f5es da banda, j\u00e1 que Janick passa longe de ser um m\u00fasico sofisticado ou virtuoso, mas ele sequer contribuiu com o processo criativo de \u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>O guitarrista, inclusive, foi surpreendido quando Bruce o alertou de que poderia pintar algo grande, para al\u00e9m do trabalho envolvendo \u201cTattooed Millionaire\u201d e a carreira solo do vocalista. Janick <a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2025\/03\/iron-maiden-nao-demitiu-janick-gers-adrian-smith-razao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">relembrou<\/a> \u00e0 revista Classic Rock em mar\u00e7o deste ano:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce tinha falado: \u2018Aprenda algumas m\u00fasicas do Maiden\u2019. Eu disse: \u2018Pensei que n\u00e3o ir\u00edamos tocar coisas do Maiden na turn\u00ea\u2019. Bruce disse: \u2018N\u00e3o vamos. Isso \u00e9 para o Maiden. Adrian est\u00e1 saindo da banda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> O hit surrupiado para o Iron Maiden <\/p>\n<p>O que acabou sendo aproveitado do trabalho pr\u00e9vio foi a m\u00fasica <strong>\u201cBring Your Daughter\u2026 to the Slaughter\u201d<\/strong>, criada para o filme <strong>\u201cA Hora do Pesadelo 5\u201d<\/strong> (1989). Apesar de n\u00e3o conter cr\u00e9ditos a Janick Gers, ela remonta \u00e0s sess\u00f5es que dariam forma a Tattooed Millionaire, mas foi incorporada ao repert\u00f3rio do oitavo \u00e1lbum do Maiden a pedido de Steve Harris. No livro de Mick Wall, o baixista revela:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Rod<\/strong> (<strong>Smallwood<\/strong>, empres\u00e1rio) pediu que Bruce fizesse a trilha sonora do filme. Quando, logo depois, ele trouxe <strong>\u2018Bring Your Daughter\u2026 to the Slaughter\u2019<\/strong>, eu disse: \u2018Puta que o pariu! Essa m\u00fasica \u00e9 fenomenal! Seria \u00f3tima para o Maiden. N\u00e3o a coloque no seu disco solo. Podemos us\u00e1-la\u2019. Bruce ficou feliz por eu dizer aquilo e satisfeito de ter escrito uma can\u00e7\u00e3o que poder\u00edamos utilizar no repert\u00f3rio da banda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O vocalista corrobora as palavras do chef\u00e3o da Donzela de Ferro:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteve Harris escutou a faixa antes de eu coloc\u00e1-la no \u00e1lbum e ficou dizendo: \u2018Eu quero essa m\u00fasica!\u2019. Ent\u00e3o, respondi: \u2018Beleza. \u00d3timo\u2019. Minha grava\u00e7\u00e3o original \u2013 que s\u00f3 saiu no disco norte-americano da trilha sonora do filme \u2013 \u00e9 substancialmente diferente da vers\u00e3o do Iron Maiden para ela. Os arranjos s\u00e3o id\u00eanticos, mas a minha \u00e9 meio\u2026 furtiva. A do Iron Maiden realmente vai pras cabe\u00e7as. Fiquei feliz em ver que Steve gostou tanto assim dela.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faixa surrupiada por Steve Harris para o Iron Maiden funcionou. \u201cBring Your Daughter\u2026 to the Slaughter\u201d se tornou a \u00fanica m\u00fasica da banda inglesa a atingir o primeiro lugar nas paradas de sucesso do Reino Unido. Conforme demonstrou \u00e0 revista francesa Hard Force naquele momento, o baixista estava animado e otimista com o novo disco, que seria lan\u00e7ado em 1\u00ba de outubro de 1990.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00c9 principalmente mais agressivo do que os \u00e1lbuns anteriores. Acho que alguns dos nossos f\u00e3s ficaram decepcionados com a orienta\u00e7\u00e3o musical que adotamos ultimamente. Ent\u00e3o, acho que eles ficar\u00e3o felizes em ver que estamos voltando a um estilo mais agressivo e poderoso. A banda ainda tem a chama acesa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A expectativa criada por Steve Harris n\u00e3o se confirmou. \u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d tem poucos destaques para al\u00e9m de \u201cBring Your Daughter\u2026 to the Slaughter\u201d. Basta ver o setlist da atual turn\u00ea <strong>\u201cRun for Your Lives\u201d<\/strong>, que comemora os 50 anos da banda. Apesar da \u00eanfase nos nove primeiros discos de est\u00fadio, o oitavo foi renegado \u2014 nenhuma m\u00fasica dele vem sendo tocada na excurs\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHoly Smoke\u201d<\/strong> (primeiro single) e <strong>\u201cTailgunner\u201d<\/strong> at\u00e9 costumam ser lembradas pelos f\u00e3s, s\u00f3 que mais por carinho e liga\u00e7\u00e3o afetiva do que por uma real admira\u00e7\u00e3o. A promessa de fazer um disco afastado do prog e dos sintetizadores e oferecer um retorno ao Iron Maiden mais b\u00e1sico se cumpre \u2014 \u00e9 o \u00fanico \u00e1lbum do grupo a n\u00e3o ter sequer uma m\u00fasica com mais de 6 minutos \u2014, mas n\u00e3o o sustenta em aspectos qualitativos.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00ed entra tamb\u00e9m o fator grava\u00e7\u00e3o\/produ\u00e7\u00e3o. \u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d foi feito no celeiro da fazenda de Steve Harris em Essex, no interior rural da Inglaterra, com o est\u00fadio m\u00f3vel dos Rolling Stones. Tudo a contragosto de Bruce Dickinson, que depois disparou em entrevista \u00e0 Classic Rock, em 2000:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFoi uma m#rda! Era um disco que soava uma m#rda, e eu queria que n\u00e3o tiv\u00e9ssemos feito dessa forma. Na \u00e9poca, eu me senti t\u00e3o culpado quanto qualquer outra pessoa, dizendo: \u2018Que legal! Olha, estamos todos cobertos de palha!\u2019 Que piada!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ao site <a href=\"https:\/\/bravewords.com\/news\/bruce-dickinson-i-have-to-share-responsibility-and-blame-for-possibly-being-the-worst-sounding-iron-maiden-album-ever-with-the-exception-of-the-first-album\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bravewords<\/a>, o vocalista <a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2023\/11\/iron-maiden-album-bruce-dickinson-assume-culpa-som-horrivel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">acrescentou<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018No Prayer for the Dying\u2019 foi um \u00e1lbum que eu tenho que compartilhar a responsabilidade e tamb\u00e9m a culpa por ser possivelmente o trabalho com pior som do Maiden de todos os tempos, com exce\u00e7\u00e3o do primeiro. Todos n\u00f3s entramos em uma esp\u00e9cie de loucura coletiva e gravamos na cabine antiquada dos Rolling Stones em um celeiro no meio do inverno. Num acesso de entusiasmo, pensamos \u2018nossa, seremos terrivelmente descolados porque seremos agr\u00edcolas\u2019 e est\u00e1vamos correndo por a\u00ed com palha no cabelo fazendo solos de guitarra e coisas assim. Um disco com qualidade sonora horr\u00edvel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A abordagem menos fantasiosa e mais sociopol\u00edtica de faixas como <strong>\u201cPublic Enema Number One\u201d<\/strong> e <strong>\u201cMother Russia\u201d<\/strong> parece n\u00e3o ter convencido boa parte dos f\u00e3s. O mesmo vale para a capa, que ao longo do tempo teve duas vers\u00f5es (com e sem o coveiro).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d foi o \u00faltimo \u00e1lbum da Donzela a obter certificado de ouro nos <strong>Estados Unidos<\/strong>. E acabou ganhando o \u201ctrof\u00e9u Framboesa\u201d na revista Kerrang! das m\u00e3os do pr\u00f3prio Bruce, que <a href=\"https:\/\/igormiranda.com.br\/2023\/08\/iron-maiden-pior-musica-bruce-dickinson-opiniao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">elegeu<\/a> a \u201cpior m\u00fasica\u201d da hist\u00f3ria da banda:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCom certeza seria <strong>\u2018Run Silent, Run Deep\u2019<\/strong>, do \u00e1lbum \u2018No Prayer for the Dying\u2019. H\u00e1 uma parte da letra que eu levei bastante a s\u00e9rio numa certa \u00e9poca, e que diz o seguinte: \u2018A cunning fox in the chickens lair \/ A hound of hell and the devil don\u2019t care\u2019 (\u2018Uma raposa esperta no galinheiro \/ Um c\u00e3o de ca\u00e7a do inferno e o diabo n\u00e3o se importa\u2019). Acredito que essa parte por si s\u00f3 j\u00e1 a qualifica (como pior).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O vocalista arremata em tom filos\u00f3fico (e certeiro) a respeito de \u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d e o que ele define como um per\u00edodo de \u201cestagna\u00e7\u00e3o art\u00edstica\u201d para o Iron:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestamente, creio que t\u00ednhamos ca\u00eddo na armadilha da infalibilidade papal. Por que o Papa est\u00e1 sempre certo? Porque \u00e9 o Papa, portanto nunca est\u00e1 errado. Bem, mas e se por acaso ele estiver errado? Trata-se simplesmente de uma diverg\u00eancia de opini\u00f5es, e a \u00fanica opini\u00e3o que importa \u00e9 a do Papa. Bandas, grandes empres\u00e1rios, papas e pa\u00edses inteiros tornam-se v\u00edtimas de suas cren\u00e7as falaciosas. Tornam-se, em \u00faltima an\u00e1lise, v\u00edtimas de seu pr\u00f3prio sucesso. Desesperados para evitar a incerteza e cercados por pessoas que<br \/>concordam com tudo, acabam cruzando a linha que separa integridade art\u00edstica de estagna\u00e7\u00e3o art\u00edstica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Iron Maiden \u2014 \u201cNo Prayer for the Dying\u201d <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\"
